Unhooking from a spinner

#1 Post by brianewan »

Caught about seven or eight pollack on the spinner today, all tiny, all went back... but I had a bit of trouble unhooking a few. They all swam away but I couldn't help but feel that one or two may have some serious damage to their jaws and may have trouble feeding. Are their any methods for unhooking that may be less harmful to the fish? particularly for the little ones that somehow manage to swallow all three hooks...

not really, you could change from a treble to a single hook?

Google 'assist hook' a lot of people report a similiar catch rate to a treble with less damage to fish.

Crush the barbs on the hook(s), it will make it safer for yourself and cause less damage to the fish when unhooking.

good set of forceps usually do it for me - dont like the idea of crushing barbs when i'm spinning for big polluck had too many turn and slip hooks that way.

Use bigger trebles that way maybe the smaller ones wont be able to get the lot in his mouth :?: 8)

I swap all my trebs with single circle type hooks. Check out my Kerry fishing trip in Shore reports. The same hooks I use in those pics are the ones I replace on my kilty lures, german sprats etc.
I dont believe It makes any or much difference, pollock and bass have big mouths, you will be fine.
Very easy to unhook..!
