Shadless at St Mullins

#1 Post by Ashley Hayden »

On the couple of times that I have traveled down to fish St Mullins the shad have been noticeable by their absence. Granted the tides have been small until now, has this been the form in 2011?

Did happen to witness Ken Murphy from Cork land a shad over a three hour session yesterday morning.

Looks like there was a much smaller run of fish this year. Hopefully this is only a temporary blip and they make a full recovery next year.

Fished St.Mullins last Monday and we only saw one shad caught over about 6 hours. There was a seal moving up and down the river who seemed to be having better luck though :|

i went down on tues and it was such a lovely day i didnt even mind i didnt hook up      as for the seal he is only doing what nature intended picking off the weak and slow fish leaving the fit ones to spawn :D
(not that i wasnt cursing him everytime he popped up chewing a shad  )
(edit due to loose wire in my brain)
if john was in st mullins on mond then so was i or i was dreaming on tues  so was al

four of us went down on monday not a touch in 6 hours  it seemed like 3 seals working the stretch, one near me another up by the lock and one down at the cafe, not good seeing one eating about 10 or 12 fish in the short time i was there

Fished last sunday from 4:15 a.m. , water highest at about 5.00 a.m, until it dropped so low I was only picking up weed every cast. Stopped then and cooked some grub, then had a kip and started again when water started to rise again. Then the wind started to blow a hooley straight up the river making it very difficult fishing. Never had a touch in all this time. Spoke to a few of the lads, one had 3 fish and his mate had 6, 1 a specimen, but they were the only ones I heard of.
Enjoyed my day , left at about 7.30 p.m., and came home with a face like a stop sign from the sun, forgot the sun cream again. :D

Was down today and landed two and my buddy landed one they were small 0.58kg was the best

We were foul hooking them instead of them taking the taz

We missed loads. We would feel a take and miss it. When we reeled in there would be scales on the treble.

I wonder have they gone off the feed. Because between us we missed over 20

No sign of the seal today

We were fishing about 200 yards down river of the lock gates on low water. Plenty of fish 3/4's the way over the river.

Was talking to the other anglers and they hadn't got a tap all day down at the coffee shop up to the bend.

I was using a pearl holographic speckled taz.
