West Cork in July

#1 Post by ATF »

Brand new to the site - coarse fisherman, but after last years holiday in Courtmacsherry, on verge of been converted!!!
Am heading to West Cork again in July, Mrs wants to head for Rosscarbery, i want to head back to Courtmacsherry - anyway, not looking for info on marks (know what the reply will be!)
does anyone know a good guide in or around Clobakilty/Courtmac that could take me out for a half days lure fishing and what would be a ball-park price ???
Have'nt got a dedicated lure outfit, hope to make do with Greys Prodigy 2lb test curve rod and Okuma baitrunner (15lb braid) - any comments on my set-up appreciated.
And finally, was on Inchydonney beach last year and the river/estuary looked extremely fishey - could someone PM me if it is worth fishing or not???
regards

I can't post a link but google "kinsale bass guides" and they should look after you. They know their stuff and will put you on the fish

:) :) Start at Rosscarberry Pier, up the steps onto the rocks round the headland. Pollack not enormous but good on light tackle.
Get yourself a pack of Dexter wedges, (about 4 in a pack) various sizes up to about 2 ounces, mini subukies (for sandeel/mackerel/pollack)
From Rosscarberry, once over the causeway (heading from the west) turn right and follow the coast road. Numerous beaches, with
rocks/coves/headlands all offer various types of fishing be it ground or spinning. Some of these beaches can get crowded, but July is not the main holiday season so it wont be to bad. Give it a go, but be aware it is the Atlantic and can be rough with the occasional rogue wave. If in doubt
you have plenty of sheltered coves. Get yourself Ordnance survey maps of the area's (Discovery Series). Google Ordnance Survey
and order direct should take about (at the most) a week, you will find them extremely useful. Enjoy

thanks for the replies, question regarding beach fishing for bass with lures - seen a Henry Gilby clip on youtube where he was fishing in Ireland on a beach (incoming tide) with a rubber shad and 2-3oz bomb weight (3ft above lure) - cast out and bumped the lure back in over the sand - he caught on this method. Tried it out in Castlegregory last year in Sept. while proper anglers ledgered - needless to say, i caught nothing (only gave it an hour before i packed up, rogue wave over the chest waders!)
Anyone ever try this method and had any success - as the conventional method is to ledger on beach marks.....

Hi there, you have been given some good advice already, there are some amazing coves and headlands to explore around West Cork. And with your knowledge of coarse fishing you will most likely connect, even float fishing will often produce from the rocky shore. keep it simple and enjoy the scenery. If you can lay your hands on a boayancy jacket, all the better. there have been too many people swept in even on a calm day. I shall be fishing that area around Rosscarbury/ Union Hall myself around that time and also have a charter booked with Colin Barnes on the 3rd of July, so if you would like to meet up you can P.M me. Happy hunting.

Have booked 2 weeks in Tragumna, near Skibereen - from trawling through this site and others it seems that the bass fishing is less productive further west of Conakilty u go.....
can anyone shed any light on this???
Will still be bringing my chest waders and spinning outfit and fishing any likely looking marks

Bass Dad is one half of Kinsale Bass Guides, AFAIK, so you also should be able to catch him through the web link posted above, would be money well spent if time is at a premium and you want your best chance at getting a bass.

Decent pollack fishing supposed to be had at Tragumna (there's a small bay right there which I'm sure is where your accommodation is), so you're in a handy spot to sneak out for short sessions in the evenings and mornings without having to negotiate a visa (time it for Corrie/Eastenders/Fair City and she might not even notice you're gone). Yogurtnutter on here might be able to tell you more.

Also you could do worse than to drop into Halfway Angling Centre on your drive down (it's in Halfway, the first village out of the city on the west Cork road), no better place to find out where in the area is producing fish and also to melt your credit card on lures or bait.

Enjoy.

Could do with some on advice on what to look for regarding a good lure fishing mark - should i looking at low tide and what kind of areas - over sand or rock - how shallow a mark etc....
presuming the best times are on the coming tide and preferably low light conditions (early morning / late evening)
Will have the discovery series map(s) of the area so will have a bit of a recci the first few days down.....
Will bass give their presence away by scattering prey fish (like perch do) ??

Just back from West Cork after 15 really enjoyable days.....took the advice of Alfiebass and contacted a guide, Peter Aspinwall for a session. Headed out on his boat (with a bloody big engine and sore arse!) from Ring. Unfortunatley, the conditions were pretty poor, little or no wind and very little white water on marks - cast our arms off to no avail - we did get into some nice pollack over deeper kelp water but no bass.....Peter was disappointed but was a pleasure to spend a few hours fishing with someone as nice and knowledgeable as Peter. A few days later and the winds picked up nicely and i donned the waders and headed for a few marks we covered from the boat.....seemed like pretty perfect conditions, coming tide and plenty of white water - until i put a lure in the water - weed. Couldnt keep a clean lure in the water so tried a few other marks along the shore and all the same.
Anyway, am truely hooked on this sea fishing lark, especially after the first lightening run of a pollack - and will be back for more. Anyone fancy swapping a house in Limerick for nice house in/around Clonakilty !!!!
Will be heading for Castlegregory later in the summer...been there plenty times before but not with fishing in mind - are there any worthwhile spots for some lure fishing down there???
If i remember correctly, there is a nice looking stretch of boulder-strewn beach across the road from Spillanes pub on the Maherees - would it hold a few bass anyone???
anyway, thanks for all the usefull info on this thread and a big thanks to Alfiebass for putting me onto Peter. (does anyone know Alfiebass real name, Peter was asking??)
