Light reel

Hi, I bought a reel (Shimano Catana 4000RA) off a guy last year so I can fish mackerel in Kilkee Co.CLare during the summer. Was later told that it was too light for fishing at "the castle" near Dunlickey. Was wondering if people on here agree with this and if so are there other suitable marks around Kilkee where I can catch mackerel?

that reel would be very light alright but it be perfect if you want just sport from mackeral an not quantity maybe load it with 8lb line with a 9ft rod an a spinner an you will have great sport with it as iv done this before with an 8ft an a abu cardinal with 6lb line on it an its great fun

Thanks for your reply, do you know of any other marks around kilkee that would be easier on the light reel or should I just bite the bullet and get a bigger reel?

I wouldn't consider that a light reel at all if you are after mackeral.

As others have said, use it with a spinning rod, 8-12lb line and an 18 or 28g toby or similar, and you'll be fine to catch mackeral anywhere.

The problem with light reels for mack bashing off the likes of Dunlickey and the castle, is that you're dragging strings of macks up a cliff and this takes its toll on any reel. Better off buying a quality reel it will last you longer. The likes of the AP power by Tubertini are the most robust fixed-spool reel I've ever seen and would be ideal for this kind of fishing.
