Conger Rod

I've been finally talked into trying for conger this year and I know lads use a boat rod for them. What type of rod would suit as I've no clue as to the class size or lengths. And also I would not want to spend a packet cause I'd say it would only be used a couple of times a year at most.

I got a cheap boat rod and reel out of tallaght gun and rod last year for the se thing think it was only 50 quid Reel wasn't great but the rod is grand.

Any standard 20-30lb class rod. 10/0 hook and 150mono trace or wire. Mate Al fro al and jordan fame landed an 18lb conger using a cheap ron thompson hardcore rod which as more than up to the task.

you will need an 80lb class stand up stick and nothing smaller than a penn 6/0

Given the budget i would recommend the Shakespeare ' Tide Water boat 30 ' you should get this for under €50. the reel is more difficult, as is the rule with hand tools 'buy quality and have it for life'. well maybe not for life, but spend as much as you can afford on a known brand name, Penn, Shimano, ect. but if your budget is under the €100. go for the Shakespeare tide water XT 30ld multiplier. You should also get this for under €50. Suffix are selling budget braid 50ld for around €25 for 300mt.this is good and strong but has a diameter that would put a lot of people off, but not conger. Slosh 30 would be my choice for reel, rod's I use are a DAM 8ft 12-20lb boat rod or my old Ron Thompson 12ft beachcaster - depends on the venue.

Slosh 30 cost me €45 2nd hand on ebay.

Ron Thompson beach caster was the very 1st rod I bought which cost me €40 new.

I got 2 of the DAM boat rods and 2 cheap shakespeare boat multies 2nd hand for €60.

Slosh 30 or okuma magnatix 30 with 35lb to 40lb. I've found these reels to be the best that work for me as for a rod wouldn't use a boat rod unless i'm fishing between rocks on breakwaters, i use a greys apollo mk2 which imho where built for congerin. When you hook a 30lb plus eel on a beachcaster its great fun another rod which does the job well in a 6 to 10oz uptider. And always use bronzed hooks as its not alway possible to remove the hook, this way the hook will rust away within a couple of days and use 150lb snoods as i can a big eel bite me off on 100lb snoods. Hope this helps

dafella, was i wrong in assuming you were fishing from a boat ? as the set-up i suggested would only be suitable from a boat.

Yeah I have an Apollo! Cracking rod for the rough stuff. I have tons of reels and was just going to use a 525 or slosh 20. Looks like that answers that. Cheers for all the replies.

Yeah sorry should have said that it would be from rocks or a pier. I always avoided going for them for some reason but like I said I'm after being talked into it. Probably cause I hate fishing from a pier!
