Abu multiplier reel help needed!

#1 Post by darrendavitt »

Hi guys I just bought an abu garcia ambassadeur 6500 mag reel and think it's great but I'm having one major problem with it....the star drag when tightened to the max still let's line off the reel relatively easy...am I missing something or is there a problem with the reel??I've used multipliers on the boat before with star drags and they lock up when tightened to the max are beachcaster reels different?! Thanks for any advice in advance. Darren

Open her up, get down to the clutch assembly and there should be in total six drag washers consisting of carbon & steel washers inserted in alternating fashion..If they are all present then one by one take them out and clean them, make sure they are DRY when you are putting them back in no oil or water should be used.

If this doesnt work have a look at the reel schemeatics which you should be able to find through google and make sure everything is put in the right way round and that you arent missing any pieces.

hope this helps

Thanks for the geariod!I would be right in saying that when the drag is turned on to the max it shouldn't let line out?it's a brand new reel so I think id rather take it back if it's not working right rather than open it up and start messing with it because I think there would be warranty issue if I did that?

Oh if its new take it back for sure. If the drag was locked down tight you'd want to be exerting a fair bit of force to pull line off, ie the line would be cutting into your fingers with pressure. If you are confident enough to do what I said in the first post then go for it, they will never know you opened the reel, but if you dont mind waiting for it to be repaired then let someone else(the seller) sort it.

Maybe I'm being too simplistic here but is it not a case of the spool tension nut (or nuts) being too loose? If you loosen the star drag, tighten up the knurled nut on the right hand side (centre) of the reel, tighten the drag again and see how that goes?

In my defence the plastic washer that pulls the tension nut up and down was broke so turning the knurled nut had no effect and I had to use a pliers!

darren just wondering have you filled your reel with line and if so , is the line on tight enough . if you tie braid directly to the spool it will not get enough of a grip on
the spool and it will seem like the drag is not working. if this is not the case and it is a new reel just bring it back where you bought it and dont dream of opening
it up as it is under warranty
