Abu 6500 C3CT Sports Rocket help!

#1 Post by Hooker »

I've dug out an Abu 6500 C3CT Sports Rocket that my dad bought years ago (10-12) and only put to use about 4 times and is still mint before returning to FS. I've never used a multi but have taken a notion to learn how.

My main problem is that one of the brake blocks was misplaced at some stage and I've searched the net and can't seem to find the same ones online. I think they are ceramic, small crimp like and brown. Can any1 point me in the right direction?

I have read alot on the site about learning to use a multi, alot of good info. I know this reel might be considered difficult to learn with but reckon it's worth a try before investing in a modern multi set up. Anyone who has experience with this particular reel and has any wisdom they wish to pass on please do or any1 with any related wisdom atall really.

Oh yeah the reason I want to lean to use a multi is I find a FS has it's limitations fishing for smoothies and possibly tope ie. setting the drag.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you should be ok with just the one break block and the mags turned up fully,
if not get someone locally using multis to go out and show you,

dont be totally put of by fixed spools as ive seen plenty of smoothies been caught with em and tope

sports rockets have two forms of braking, fibre brake blocks and using diff viscosity oils in the bearings. You should be ok with one block, but when only Starting off using multi add 2 drops of red label TG rocket fuel into each bearing, this will help slow things down for you. just don't tighten the two end caps! There needs to be at least 1 to 2mm of latteral movement of the spool in order for it to run free.
I might have some blocks somewhere...

Thanks for the replies.

dbrock the one I have has no magnets, think it might be pre magnets. I was lucky enough to watch one or two top lads fishing at range at the masters when I was stewarding, was a little in awe. Not knocking FS's, just find setting the drag before and after each cast when fishing for bigger fish a bit of a pain. I even used the alvey i brought home from Oz but can't hit the same distances I can manage e using my aerlex's and have tackled lots of hounds but no tope yet!

husshunter, now knowing they are made of carbon fiber I think i've sourced them now thanks.

paddyc, think there might be a bottle of rocket fuel from when dad bought it in the "stuff box" in the shed but will get a bottle online. I read somewhere that if you spin the spool in free spool it should go for 7-8 seconds when set up correctly. Waiting to get to know some of the lads in my new club a bit better and might ask for some tuition. Most of the club comps I fish are scratching or flounder venues most days.
