Grating on a fixed spool?

#1 Post by goldfish17 »

One of my reels has started to make a grating noise and I was wondering how you would go about stopping the grating noise
and how much damage will it do? Any help would be great,
Goldfish

Evening,

Grating is not good !

I would recommend a full strip down, clean, and re lubricate with grease/oil as per manufacturers guidelines.

I have had the reel for a couple of years, about 2. I will try to clean it but will get a new one
if I have to. Any recomendations would be great, something around 60-80 euros.

Keep an eye out for ones on eBay, they appear from time to time and go for around €70.

got these for family members. they love them and want another each : daiwa emcast evo advanced 5500 - should pick up for about £50
i personally love the Grauvell Zenith Z5000 but they are about £100 and if i pick up another continental rod will take the daiwa reel to pair with it

i had a fixed spool that was grinding every now and then ,i gave it a good lashing with the power washer squirted oil everywhere and it stopped, prob a build up of sand and grit ,it works fine now  most fixed spools are throw away jobs unless you pay big buck they are not worth repairing

As roger has said most reels are not worth trying to repair and with Fixed Spool reels you get what you pay for. Buying a cheap fixed spool reel is false economy they tend to last for a season or less and pack in. What might seem like a bargain at the time might cost you more financially in the long run, or worse still loose a fish of a lifetime. The quality of the materials in some of the cheaper reels is quite poor, bearings, gears, spindle shaft and the body itself. Many of them come from the cheaper factories in the Far East not dedicated to building quality. If you’re serious about your fishing you are better paying a little more and buying quality.
