I'm not asking because i wish to try this but I've seen a few trawellers working the wall a few times over the past winter period and wondered if it was legal.

No it is not illegal provided the trawler is licensed.

never a nice sight but they have to make a living. just out of curiosity what would they be trawling for if they have to dump all the huge cod that legend has it is in that area. i thought cod was still legal to land once your not over your quota if anyone knows they might let me know

I think your right there john. I'm guessing the above comment was reference to the "fish fight" campaign that hugh fernley whittingstall is running at the moment. Few posts up here about it recently. And i know they have to make a living but it's bloody unfair when you're standin there all day in brass monkeys weather chuckin expensive baits at the fish and then some chap comes along and scoops them all up.

There should be a limit of at least 5 miles all around this island inside which it is illegal to carry out any commercial fishing !!!

There should be some limits alright. Even from a safety point of view, i was down that way a few weeks back having a look around the marks and i saw scuba divers heading out from the pier. Don't think it would be a nice sight if one of them lads got tangled up in the nets.

Even if they were stopped from netting in harbours and estuarys that would be a good start I think!
