Re: Digging Razor
wat u diggin with a spade.i wudnt bother with the spade at all.some use salt.some say a bait pump works too.me im a traditional bloke and use the hands.and i find them easier to get in the water too along the edge.make sure the day is good and sunny,if there on the beach in the dry sand on a good sunny day then tend to come up about an inch out of the sand.handy enof to get then.but wen in the water look out for the white patches;,,move quietly in the water so they wont shoot off.get good feet position ove the white patch.use ur 2 fingers closest to ur thumb and go down one side of the patch(not on the white patch)wen ur down lets say 2 inches push ur drag or push ur fingers towards the patch and u shud feel his shell b y now so keep an firm push against the shell.wat ur doin now is ur wedgin the shell with ur fingers against the sand so he doesnt go deeper on u.the get ur thumb and wiggle ur way down the other side of the shell(opposite ur fingers) until u get a grip of the shell too.so now at this stage u have the top section of the shell in ur thumb and fingers.sometimes u only have the first inch of the shell but no harm.keep a solid grip grip on the shell while tryin to pull him out.never let go of the shell unless u think ur grip isint good enof and ur wasting ur time.thats why its vital to get it right at the start.dont worry if u lose a few.it always happens.trust me wen u have a grip, the razor is tryin to go down and ur ur tryin to pull him up so it is a battle..this mite not suit people with bad backs.razors have a very strong suction so expect to be there for a minute battling with him.but wen u retrieve him and get him free its a good feelin and u know u have good food or bait, watever u intend to use it for.dont be shocked if u pull one out and theres no fish in the shell.it means he left his shell and got away on u
.if ur not used to it trust me for u to pull 20-30 razors, expect to feel abit tired after it.best of luck mate.im hungry now thinkin of them.i will havce to go down now and pull a few

Re: Digging Razor
hi codling,,,razors are collected on low water marks ov a spring tide,if you look for a key hole shape marking in the sand, and sprinkle a bit ov table salt on the hole they will come up on ther own,,i collect them without salt,,,you havto tread lightly on the sand as they pick up on vibration and shoot down ther holes,,,most people dont use a shovell as they dont want to ruane ther razor beds,,,,hope this helps

Re: Digging Razor
As the other guys said don't dig them - use salt, its far more effective
It is a waste of time trying to get them at the moment, you have to wait for really low spring tides, a 0.0 or 0.1 m tide, maybe a 0.2 m tide if there is a high pressure zone over the country - that pushes the tide down an extra few tens of cms.
Even then doubt you would get too many on Clonea. If you have see the razor shells on the beach there then they were probably left by anglers.

Re: Digging Razor
not in all but in most parts of ireland well known razor marks have being well picked in abundance.this means that the razors are more than lickely confined to the water at all times and at all low spring tides.so in this case im sayin salt is useless unless u know there on the dry beach at low.handy to bring some any way.u better off to learn how to use the hand where u can go out in to the water and at dept to get some..its also a good idea to bring waders as the wellies cvan fill with water.also have a t-shirt with short sleaves.

Re: Digging Razor
Over the next couple of months there are a few times when the tide should be suitable to go and collect some razor from the shore. Spring tides are the best for them.
February: 18th - 22nd (best tides being on 19th & 20th)
March: 18th - 23rd (best tides being on 20th & 21st)
