Black Head Clare

#1 Post by pajo »

Hello there,

Can I get a few views on what the fishing has been like here over the past couple of years, please? I've searched the reports a couple of times but not got that much to go on - also some posts seem to relate to Black Head in Antrim. I haven't fished here as much as I'd have liked recently but hope to do a bit there this year. I know there have been problems with some so-called anglers treating the place like a rubbish tip (which is absolutely criminal) and there's little comfort there on a summer's evening when the mackerel are around but my query is about the fishing, i.e. is Black Head still a good mark and what species are available there? I've got mackerel, pollack, dogfish and small conger there but nothing sizeable - what is the general experience in recent years?

Thanks,
Pajo

from my own experience it has gone way down in terms of size and numbers of fish - outside all the trouble with the hundreds there destroying the place in the summer

from talking to others you could catch cod there 30 years ago - never seen one there myself in a decade - it seems if theres ever a run outside of the mack bash season its not too long before a trawler comes and sweeps the bay

on its day it can still produce 10 species and you can have great sport - but those days are few and far between - and id rather fish some place else far away from the hoards
