Looking to get back into sea fishing

#1 Post by Sparkie »

Looking to get back into sea fishing after not doing it for the past 8 years, i am from the isle of man and i gave all my gear away when i moved to ireland 5 years ago! Yes the silliest thing anyone could do!

I was a very keen sea fisher back home and also a very keen fly fisher, since being in ireland i took a chance trip to a fly fishing lake a few years ago and just had to go out and buy new gear. I've now decided i want to get back into sea fishing as i have always loved it just as much as my fly fishing!

I found this site last nite while looking into getting some tackle sorted!

So this post is just me wanting to have ppl on here give me a hint in where is best to get gear and where is the cheapest place, will be looking to get 1-2 century/zziplex rods and a few reels do go with them, would also like ppl to give me there opinions on what rod/reels out there are going to be worth the money and how they rate them. As 8 years without fishing is a long time and things have moved on

Would also like ppl to give me a clue on where to fish this time off year and what species i will be catching, i live in cabinteely so anywhere in dublin/wicklow is with in easy reach for me!

thanks to anyone who replies

hi sparky, welcome to the site ,things around dublin / wicklow are a bit slack at the moment but you will still get a few ,a good headlight will be required as night fishing is better in general, did you use fixed spool or multi? 7ht mag is a cracking reel but not cheap,as for rods you should look at the ian golds range great reports from anyone who has one including the casting fraternaty ,200 smackers will get you a good fishing tool with several models to choose from see review below

sparkie ive a few beach casters if ya wanna get down to killiney for a chuck some day to see what suits you instead of just buying one, ive also a few dif types of reels ,
and as roger says your best bet at the moment is night fishing so a decent enough headlamp is essential

Was one off the reals i gave away, i wont be replacing it either, they cost more now than what they did when i bought mine 10+ years ago.i think i gonna just get the slosh 30, as i just love that reel and it can cover flat and rough grounds and can crank in big fish. i am deff looking for a zziplex or century as i had both b4 i gave up fishing. but just not sure what to get yet. its been a good 8 years since i cast a line!

would feel guilty if i casted one of your rods mate, as 1st cast is gonna be a nest and i'd hate to get off to a bad start with anyone who will end up being on most beaches im on

I was just looking at the reviews on the hst, it seems like a nice rod. I'm willing to look into any rods to be honest

I am looking for a rod I can use to fish the beaches and the rocks. I want a rod I can throw a bait out far or in close.

It also has to be able to cope with 40lb+ tope of the beach for when I'm back in the isle of man visiting my family.

I now have 2 rods sorted, and I also have 2 reels in the post to me. Also have my seat box and tripod arriving in next few days to. So now I just need go sort out line, and other bits and bobs to make up some rigs

So hopefully next weekend or in the week after I will get out for my 1st cast in 8 years. Really looking forward to it. Will just need sum tips on where to go and at what stage off the tide and so on.
