New to Cod fishing - Some advice please re Youghal/Monkstown

#1 Post by Magpie »

Hi all. I am newcomer to cod as have been mainly spinning for bass over last couple summers.

Just wondering would you fish Ferrypoint in Youghal/Monkstown wall into a full tide ?
Is it better at nighttime cod fishing or does that matter ?
Could you use King rag as bait for cod ?
Any other general tips would be greatly appreciated.
Just got new 7HT reel so will be practising my first casts on multiplier.

We are blessed on the south coast with mighty fishing.
Also, new enough to this site but its amazing with the amount of freely given advice etc. !!!!!

Cheers all. :)

Welcome to the site. I don't know about youghal but there's alot of lads on here from around there and that fish it alot so they would know. Monkstown fishes best in daylight from low tide up. Rag worm will catch cod but they're not a tough bait so they're not best suited to distance casting. Common lug, black lug, peeler crab and razor fish will all catch good cod. Some of the other lads on here will know much more about it but i said i'd let you know as much as i do. Best of luck with the new reel and happy fishing. :)

Best thing you could do is join a local club and get to know a few of the lads by attending the competitions. This way you will get far more local info and learn a lot more far quicker.

There are a few good clubs in your area.
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

KStaff winning matches is the new black.

agree fully with el capitan there joining a club is the quickest way to hands on knowelege and information. most clubs have a good crew of capable anglers who are willing to pass on techniques to guys who are interested in learning and progressing.

with regard to catching codling the most vital tactic is to fish a venue that you know will produce fish dont get too hung up about bait or what gear is best to use as none of this matters too much if the fish are in front of you. as a general rule though youghal fishes better in darkness.

Hi Magpie,

I too am new to the cork area. Coming into my secound year here but I am getting to know a few spots.

Firstly, fishing at monkstown is best during the day all along the wall. I have fished hi and low tide and have had found no difference as both produce fish. Water gets too fast after an 1hr and a half either side of high and low. I find bigger baits are better for bigger cod. Flapper rigs with worms etc seem to hook smaller fish like whiting and small codling. Pennel pulley rigs 2/0 work fine for me. But all sorts will catch. Crab works best I think. If using frozen keep it frozen until you are putting it on the hook. Thawed mushy crab does not work as well. I use a wide mouth flask which keeps the crab frozen after hours outside just take out a crab after you bait up for the next cast.

As for Youghal I am not as experienced but have found a good site which put me in the right direction. http://homepage.eircom.net/~fishy1tou/local.htm
