cod gone / trawled/upriver?

#1 Post by patk »

was out tonight in youghal and monkstown earlier. For the last month in either place cod were about both places in huge numbers. Not tonight. Heard so many reasons from different people. Trawlers , tides , temperature , depth of water? Most rational to me was from an angler in youghal who said the trawlers were like xmas lights at the mouth of the harbour nights during the week . Any ideas? Extraordinary change and so sudden

Hi
Trawled, saw one stuck to the bottom between forts on wed, what a shame :(
But it was only a question of time before it happened.
Still good offshore though

also has been northeasterly winds the past week. has caused the water to clear and remain pretty calm so would imagine alot of fish have moved offshore

Clarity of water wouldn't make much difference in Cork Harbour. What's happeneing here is that it has been heavily trawled. All the half deckers have been hard at it for the last two months. It was bound to happen. The huge numbers of cod we saw last winter were too small to be of commercial value. This year they're just about the right size. Some of the half deckers have been averaging about 20 - 30 boxes a day. There are less at it at the moment as the fish are now starting to thin out. No wonder! Having said that there are plenty of whiting about, and of a good size.

I asked this last week.

(Any one know how fish quotas system works at present over a 100 box's of cod are taken by small boats 17ft to half decker each day up the Suir in Waterford i am told it is the same in Cork and Kerry most of these are landed at small harbours how do they get into the quota system or are they outside of the system.)

still have not got an answer take it no one knows how the quota system works for cod up rivers out of the sea .
Its not closed thats for sure

To be honest I've little or no knowledge of quotas but if you've a bit of time on your hands there is plenty of reading here if you follow the links: http://www.bim.ie/templates/text_conten ... de_id=1153

Not sure if this is of any help to you. I would imagine the onus at the end of the day would be on the fisherman to declare his catch and abide by the quotas, but as with everything in life I'm sure there's plenty of people who don't stick to the rules

Its sad to see this. I understand people have to make a living but to do so at so many others loss cannot be right. The money thats invested by pleasure anlglers should be taken into account as well as the businesses that depend on them. Its a pity we do not have the political will in this country to reach a comprimise thats good for all and this includes the future of inshore fish stocks.
