Lucky escape

#1 Post by paul mason »

Fishing Kilgorman yesterday in the Wexford beach championship, with an hour and a half into the competition I decided to take a swim  . I waded out to cast the water was only up to my calf, I got the cast away and turned around to fold over my bale arm I got hit by a mother of a wave which turned me arse over tip it was like being in a washing machine. I managed to hold on to my rod and dig it into the sand and drag myself out, the back wash was savage and it took all my strength. This was not a very pleasant experience and I was lucky to escape with a soaking and a knackered phone and I would urge anglers to be careful wading out to cast on beaches with a heavy surf rouge waves can happen.
I was very shaken by this dramatic accident and with hindsight I was a little foolish wading.

And yes I did fish on
Kstaff has always been the new black in my eyes anyway!!!!!!!

Indomitable spirit - never giving up or wanting to give up.

hi paul ,a few years ago i saw the same thing happen ,one of the
lads was standing on the beach and was talking to someone when a wave hit him and sent him flying thirty yds up the beach, he was blessed he managed to grab his rod stand and dig it into the sand. we lost sight of him until the wave turned and we could see the water going back out over his body, he lost his rod and we found his tackle box up the beach and he had lost everything  that wave just came out of nowhere.

Similar thing hapened me last year in ECR comp, big wave hit me when I went into the sea to get my rod which had been swept away by another big wave, I got knocked over by the big wave and got compleatly submerged, the boys helped me out and I fished on to win the comp :D The power of the backwash is savage alright.

glad to hear you are ok after it paul.
in all opens here in ulster we have a rule in place for no wading above knee height to try to help in situations like this, but some guys still get spilled!
i guess its down to each angler to use their own head on the day and read the water to figure if its safe or not, mistakes can happen even with years of experience, and all anglers should be keeping an eye out on fellow anglers as well.
Not the BigPhil from Irish Angler mag, I'm the original, i swear!!!!
