well,it had the coalie/pollock fins all right,but the lower jaw was wrong for a coalie,the colour was all wrong,and the shape of the fish was wrong for a coalie/pollock.there were five of us fishing and none of us had seen one like that before.

Well Noel, it was definitely coalie! The reason ye hadn't seen it before is down to the fact ye haven't fished to many beaches in Galway :-). Coalies are fairly common on Galway beaches. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

Well done to fishingking for giving a reason with his answer.
The difference between the pollack and coalfish are here

POLLACK
Three dorsal, two anal fins. Pelvic fins tiny. Tail-fin not forked when expanded. Lower jaw protruding; no barbel. Lateral line a brown seam sharply bent behind pectoral fin. Usually brown on the back, with gold or orange reflections on the side. Grows to about 20 lb.

COALFISH
Three dorsal, two anal fins. Pelvic fins tiny. Tail-fin forked. Lower jaw the shorter in young juveniles, but protruding in larger examples. A barbel present, but so minute as not to be noticeable. Lateral line a white stripe, nearly straight (not marked by a white stripe in young juveniles). Dark green or blackish green above, paler on the sides.

This was taken in part from this booklet. http://www.skuaangling.net/fishbook.pdf
Specimen Fish 2024: Shore Rockling (3) 36cm, 34cm, 31cm; Thick Lipped Mullet (2) 58cm, 57cm; Smooth Hound (1) 109cm; Sting Ray (1)125cm; Ballan Wrasse (1) 48cm ; Corkwing Wrasse (1) 24.8cm. Golden Grey Mullet (2) 43cm, 1.8lb; 40.6cm, 1.55lb;
