Fluorocarbon Problem
I always used Maxima for my snoods in 10 & 20lb but bought some 12lb Sakuma flourocarbon to try it out. I was and am happy with the Maxima but wanted to try something that would be a little more invisible and lighter when fishing in close with braid.
I've used it four times now on four different beaches and in both calm and rough(ish) conditions. Each time I've had problems with it getting tangled up in itself, a swivel or rig link clip. I have even lost a decent fish because it snapped where it was caught in the rig clip. Has anybody else found this with either the brand, the breaking strain or flouro in general?
I'm thinking of going back to my old ways now!

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
have to say both sakuma and stren are muck. stren is far too stiff, i use it the odd time for whiting when im after an anti tangle stand off snood. sakuma is cheap, wirery, stretchy and has poor knot and abrrasion strength. by far the best value for money flouro ive used so far is tubertini gorilla, its nice and supple and presents the bait nicely, its abbrassion resistence and knot strenght is very good.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
The 12lb sukuma fluorocarbon probably has a very low diameter maybe about 8lb maxima and this could be the reason. You never said what diameter it is but most brands of fluorocarbon have a lower diameter than mono, I always choose line by diameter rather than breaking strain.
Another reason why line gets tangled is if you're fishing in heavy seas with a wash with light line it keeps spinning your snoods and ultimately your snoods get tangled.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Yeah Paul the diameter of the Maxima is 0.30mm while the Sakuma is 0.297mm. I'd say that could be the reason. I might even try the others suggested but was asking did people have a slimier problem with this brand. Thanks for the replies though.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Some fluorocarbon are stiffer than others and are less prone to tangling I'm not familiar with Sakuma so I don't know what it's like. I have been using fluorocarbon a long time and have also used Maxima extensively in the past for snoods and have not had problems or found much difference between the two with tangles.
Most of my traces consist of 0.35 fluorocarbon which is equal to 18lb bs and yes I do get the odd tangle.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
choice of lead also plays a vital role in eliminating tangles conor. too heavy and in a wash the rig will fold in back on itself, too light and will get tossed around to much. experiment with different leads during the session if you are suffering tangles. also make sure none of your snoods can reach beyond the swivel above it including the link to the mainline. i like paul use .35 for the majority of my snoods.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Ah I think it's just the diameter of the Sakuma is thin. Never had a problem with the Maxima. Think I'll just stick with what I know. It only bothered me because I lost a fish

Think it has good quality strengh against light abrasion too when wanting to land a fish if the area your fishing in is a bit rough....paul mason wrote:amnesia is great stuff some lads wont use anything else, I still use it in the heavier stuff for dogs, rays and hounds.

we're talking about flats and low diameter flouros here paddyb. peoples opinions change with experience too or is that not allowed? stren is muck for flats because its too stiff, it doesnt present the bait naturally. i use for dogs andf whiting because of these properties.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Been using Penn International for the past few months along with the usual Tubertini Gorilla on both shore and boat traces. Got to say, although a little stiffer than some, its excellent stuff. Just one thing for the OP, if you find yourself fishing a dirty slop/swell and its tangling your traces, there is no real need to be using fluoro on your traces for flats and the like. Opt instead for clear 15lb Amnesia and you will be sorted, Fluoro has its place but its not essential in all circumstances, particularly coloured seas etc.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Thanks Pete, it was just for really flatty bashing and the likes on braid. I was trying to just lighten up as much as I could. I think the problem was the diameter that Paul and Eric mentioned. I found even in flat calm conditions any tide rip and it was folding back on itself and getting caught up. I may try it out again but for now I'll stick with the Maxima as I've never had a problem with it and it's a bit more forgiving then the Amnesia.

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Yeah, it can be a pain alright. The lightest I ever go is 0.25mm in gorilla UC4 and with the length of snoods I usually use, you only get away with that in a light roll. Its funny, it can come down to where you put your baits in relation to the rollers etc too, if I have persistent tangling issues I either shorten the snoods, go for the amnesia or both if I have to. Never tried Maxima, is that a coloured line?

Re: Fluorocarbon Problem
Ive used Amnesia for years now and wont use anything else...when it first came out you could only buy it in black at 15lbs....its now comes in black, red, and clear at varied breaking strains....I use 30lb clear if fishing for anything large and aggressive -ray/dogs and 15lb black for flats and anything light.
Great stuff.
