I have read on the shore angling report lately that an angler had caught a bass while shore fishing and when he reeled it in he found he had a small flounder on the bottom hook he also said he tought the bass had been hunting the flounder.
This is my expirience also . I think in low light conditions in surf flounder and dab are turned over in the water and the bass home in on the white underside of the flatfish . In 1998 i Caught an 11lb bass from the surf in morriscastle and it coughed up two small flatfish the size of desert spoons .So i was thinking if i incorporated say the back of a white plastic spoon on a trace single hook long snood would it do the business any body else tried this in the past and if so what were the results
Cheers pk

Re: Bass and Flatfish trace building
My dad used to use a spoon or toby behind a lead with a baited hooh 6-8 inches behind and sink and draw along the bottom stopping every time for 30-60sec. Started as a way to fish for flats but caught alot of different species including bass. He got smashed up a few times, poor drags on the big old mitchells he's so fond of
I've caught plenty of schoolies on flounder spoons while retrieving them. Even watched a small bass chase off a following flounder and then charge in and take the bait himself in shallow water.
Small palm sized were the bait of choice off wexford bridge at one stage. Have tried live baiting them above a spike a few times with no luck.
