Best Car for Sea Anglers?

#1 Post by alby »

Funny question I suppose, but i'm just trying to get an idea of what ye all think. My fishing car seems to be reaching the end of her life and I think it's time to start looking at her replacement!

I'm looking for decent boot space, big enough to fit rods inside (not a fan of the roof rack), not a huge engine for insurance, tax & running costs.

Reliable & Ipod plug-inable!! Nobody suggest a hi-ace

hehe, seems strange me answering this, but i know the renault megane (1.4l) has good boot space and when back seats are dropped you get a good 74 inches between boot and the back of the front seats (haven't tried it with rods yet, but managed a 77" shelving unit fitted in yesterday, just had to put my seat(passenger seat) forward a tad))

as for ipod.. get one of them radio transmitter yolks and tune the radio into it
(get the ones with the 3.5mm jack plug as opposed to the dedicated ipod/iphone ones)

I was foolish enough to buy a saloon 4 door megane which has caused me so many headaches everytime I bought anything bulky. The boot is a great size but the entrance to it isnt! Thankfully I can just about get my rods in the back seat going up the middle and lying on top of my gear stick lol!! not ideal but at least I can get them in!

Have a look at the KIA cee'd station wagon diesel, loads of boot space great economy low tax €156, have one for two years and they're very poky being a turbo. With the seats folded down I can lie down and close the boot and I'm not a small man.
Other than that get a 4x4 (a tackle box on wheels) and drive down the beach like a lot of the lads are doing. And i forgot to mention they have a 7 year warranty which carries on when sold second hand.

Driving an old Polo Saloon myself, haven't had gear in it as yet but there's enough room in the boot for maybe 3 bodies and with one side of the rear seats down I reckon could handle big 2 peice beach/surf casters and such.

Mine is the 1.9 SDI so 50+MPG but there are still some decent 1.6 petrol versions around. Don't know about insurance as this is my first car so it's extortionate anyway but these along with the older Passat estate or 306/406 estates would be good choices

Alby, if you really want a serious angling car, then it has to be the Aquajeep: http://www.aquajeep.com/ or the Water Phyton http://www.watercar.com/html/watercar_python.html, you'll never look back

Just get Gordy to do all the driving, thats what I do

I have a Renault Laguna and the boot space is deadly. I bought when I had the shop for cash and carry runs and to use as a family car (next part of being married). The only thing is I seen a 2005 Merc, I think C class for only €3,000 more then what I paid 4 years ago. Make ya sick. The only other option might be a cheap Opel or VW estate. Loads of ex-rep cars going cheap now.

Landrover Defender 110, does everything the Isuzu does but you can drive it through water with destroying the axles and all the parts are bolt on bolt off and user friendly

My one was ex-esb, so it has been serviced well all it's life and wasnt that expensive. Commercial tax rating and not bad on fuel. Dont get a petrol one!

Nice :)

I have an opel corsa which suprisingly fits my gear and 2 other lads gear into, and these rods have 8 foot tips,
Was driving a Nissan Navara jeep for the last few days but I would fit more of my gear in the corsa

Obviously not a choice for you, nobody wants to be seen in a corsa

+1 on the Landrover cant wait to have mine back on the road, but I guess your looking for something a bit smaller.

Like Tony said, the octavia diesels are a great car with a deceptively big boot - I'm sure they do a 1.4 & 1.6 petrol as well. If going for a diesel octavia, stay away from the earlier sdi engines as they are know to give trouble, stick to the tdi and you'll be grand.

When you decide what you want let me know and I'll talk to a few lads I know in the trade and see can they get you sorted @ a trade price.

No Experience of this car, but they do look like an excellent option.

The Ford Focus Estate might also be worth looking at. Pre 2008 they use the Citroen 1.6 Tdi engine and it's a very nice setup. After 2008 they use a ford 1.8 tdi engine. Not as Economical as the 1.6 and a little louder when cold, but just as nice a drive.
