Which region has the biggest thornbacks from shore?

After the terrible insults thrown at the Estuary being shjte I thought I'd throw up this poll. I'm putting forward the Estuary and putting this wee fella up as proof.

donagh i dont think a poll is the right way to do this. the results could be used by others for comercial purposes.its safer to use the reports section and count the thornies

I'll have to disagree on that. The regions are very broad and this is very unscientific unless of course the Estuary win hands down and then it will be beyond doubt

BTW what would counting thornies have to do with size.

I haven't fished all of those places and so from my own point of view I feel that it wouldn't be fair to give an answer/cast a vote.
If you's all really wanted to settle this argument on where is better for rays why don't a few people organise to go and fish the places in question or a couple of the places in question (say for example, Galway and the Shannon

). Once there fish with the same bait, using the same tactics, fish for the same length of time at each venue and see where fishes better. I don't know whether you consider the quality of the fish caught (size, weight) or the quantity of fish caught over the time scale as the basis of what region wins or not, you's could decide that at the time. That might be a better way than doing this. Just a suggestion, probably a stupid one that isn't viable but it might settle the debate once and for all. The poll may not give a good enough or fair enough indication on where fishes better.

Even though I nearly live in Galway I never fish there, cant remember any catch reports of larger thornies from Galway. I did see three double figures from the Shannon last year. Does that count?

nothing wrong with being proud - we all are, to some extent - and, to quote Clint Eastwood, every AH has an opinion and there's nothing wrong with that too, as long as you can stick to it and don't change your mind too often

, proof might be difficult but who cares, love it or leave it, it's all about fair competition, be it soccer, GAA stuff or fishing - everyone to their own, that's my opinion and you might call me an AH for that but I stick to it

Given the size of the Mayo coastline alone - the largest coastline of any county in Ireland, by far - and add to that Galway's coastline, compared to 'the Estuary', I'd safely say that Mayo/Galway probably has the potential for the largest thornbacks some where there in that vast array of coast. One caveat, catching them is a different matter.

well done mate on putting up the poll.. i think myself it is a good idea... as kerry1 said maybe a fish off would be good crack..... have to say the galway mayo coast could probaly be the best area.. i have fished alot of the countries coastline and find for numbers and sizes the west coast...... for me.......

have to agree with lucky, and having caught thornies off most of the counties listed my PB thornie was caught on my own doorstep (salthill) weighing in at just over 14lbs, and had many a thornie around the 10lbs mark from around connemara, the largest i've had from the shannon area was 8lbs, kerry was 11lbs, donegal was 4lbs, clare coast 7lbs, havent caught one in cork, but did get a nice 8lber in wexford (which isnt listed ?? )
but it has to be galway for me, and i'm not just saying that because i live here, but because its where i have caught the bigger thornies..

I'm sure big thornback ray can be caught there from shore as they get caught from the boat but I thought it wouldn't be a contender for the best place to catch them in Ireland. I can't change the poll but maybe one of the moderators can

its ok i voted for the shannon its were i caught my furst ray over 10lb

plenty of 15lb ders from the boat
