riggging up for tope

#1 Post by saving private brian »

hey lads as i had already planned this year and especially after seeing them lads in wexford i want to start getting ready for tope fishing.my uncle who is a very very experienced all round fisherman has informed me that they will be at there best around aug/sept/oct.so within the next few weeks i will be gettin bit by bit.i already have a few possible marks so the big thing is to get the gear.so im gunna ask a few wee questions below

1=wat type of rod and rod lenght wud i need.is there any specific type of rod thats good for tope fishing
2=i want to no wat type of reels to use
3=wat strength main line and wat strenght shock leader

thats all for the moment and when i get that gear i will put another topic up on the fishing and the fish handling itself

Thank Lads

Brian

Well brian, im no expert when it comes to tope fishing from the shore or boat but what i use for the tope is a good powerful beachcaster, with a good bit of backbone in it. I use the zziplex lt14 or century carbon metal. Reel wise you need a reel that can hold a lot of line. 20lbs line seem to be a popular choice with a 60 lbs + shockleader. Make sure you use a long shockleader which acts as a rubbing leader. Reelwise i would use a multiplier, such as the penn 525mag, daiwa sl20 or something simular. Finally rig wise, i would use a 130-200lbs pully rig that clips down for casting. I use sharp 6/0 or 7/0 wide gape hooks.

Make sure you set your ratchet!

A good roughground rod will do as u will probably be casting big baits plus 7to 8 ounce leads to hold bottom 20 pound main line is plenty with a abu 7000 size reel with at least 250 meters .Pulley rig with 130-150 pound line and a shock leader of 80 pound which will also act as a rubbing trace Hope this helps
