Just wondering i cant swim  but im starting to learn next week :D at 26 i suppose its about time but are self inflating life jackets ok for me to wear if i cant or are only just learning to swim? I was reading this here "Inflatable jackets aren’t for everyone. They are not suitable for non-swimmers nor for children. If a person can’t swim, it would be difficult for them to inflate the jacket by mouth and keep themselves afloat, by treading water, when or if the gas escaped or adjustments had to be made to the air in the bladder. The same reasoning applies to the non-suitability for children" on http://www.nsw.yachting.org.au/?Page=38 ... 65%2F0%2F0.

Any help is appreciated!

good to see you using it anyway, I've been swimming since i was 3 and use my inflatble 165N anytime i fish, so does my wife. It started off for out kids but became a rule.

With an inflatable, if you fall and get knocked out or dazed, it will flip you onto your back

try www.marinepartsdirect.ie postage is just €5

automatic jackets dont deflate that quick you wont have to worry about blowing it up by mouth, i inflate my ones by mouth a couple of times a year to check for leaks and they stay inlfated for days
good luck with your swimming lessons i went for lessons about 5 years ago, in my mid 30's and never looked back, im not a great swimmer but i can swim makes for better holidays at the pool now i get in, instead of dipping my feet in

Don't know anything about their suitability for a non-swimmer, give CH MARINE or MarineParts Direct a call and ask them, but the self inflating, as the name suggests, blows when a cylinder gets wet, as well as having a manual pull system.
Just remeber not to leave them in the car or damp because it could go off by itself if left damp!!

Get the self inflating one if you knock your head on the way overboard you will want the jacket to turn you face up. Also get one with a crotch strap as when you hit the water without one the jacket will be up around your head and very disorienting. Also remember to do routine maintenance checks on your life jacket by opening it up to make sure it is completely dry inside and out. Inflate it with a pump and leave inflated overnight to make sure there are no leaks. This piece of kit may well save your life some day so a little bit of care will be well worth the effort. :D :D

I can't swim very well either. I bought a self inflating one at the weekend. Best investment you can make I think.
its really light too and you'd hardly know your wearing it.
