Re: Life Jackets!
Just wondering i cant swim
but im starting to learn next week
at 26 i suppose its about time but are self inflating life jackets ok for me to wear if i cant or are only just learning to swim? I was reading this here "Inflatable jackets aren’t for everyone. They are not suitable for non-swimmers nor for children. If a person can’t swim, it would be difficult for them to inflate the jacket by mouth and keep themselves afloat, by treading water, when or if the gas escaped or adjustments had to be made to the air in the bladder. The same reasoning applies to the non-suitability for children" on http://www.nsw.yachting.org.au/?Page=38 ... 65%2F0%2F0.
Any help is appreciated!

Re: Life Jackets!
good to see you using it anyway, I've been swimming since i was 3 and use my inflatble 165N anytime i fish, so does my wife. It started off for out kids but became a rule.
With an inflatable, if you fall and get knocked out or dazed, it will flip you onto your back
try www.marinepartsdirect.ie postage is just €5

Re: Life Jackets!
automatic jackets dont deflate that quick you wont have to worry about blowing it up by mouth, i inflate my ones by mouth a couple of times a year to check for leaks and they stay inlfated for dayswilky83 wrote:Just wondering i cant swimbut im starting to learn next week

Re: Life Jackets!
Don't know anything about their suitability for a non-swimmer, give CH MARINE or MarineParts Direct a call and ask them, but the self inflating, as the name suggests, blows when a cylinder gets wet, as well as having a manual pull system.wilky83 wrote:So does this mean i should get the self inflating one?? Just remeber not to leave them in the car or damp because it could go off by itself if left damp!!

Re: Life Jackets!
Get the self inflating one if you knock your head on the way overboard you will want the jacket to turn you face up. Also get one with a crotch strap as when you hit the water without one the jacket will be up around your head and very disorienting.
Also remember to do routine maintenance checks on your life jacket by opening it up to make sure it is completely dry inside and out. Inflate it with a pump and leave inflated overnight to make sure there are no leaks. This piece of kit may well save your life some day so a little bit of care will be well worth the effort.
