Storm wrecked Triggerfish - Kilkee Strand 8/11/2009

#1 Post by Ross »

Walked Kilkee Strand today after the violent storm yesterday. Found 11 storm wrecked triggerfish and one Wrasse.
I did not even get one Trigger on rod and line this year although scuba divers reported them on the reefs in August.

Are we sure these fish are not dumped out of a net as no good to sell and only come ashore in a storm.
We get fish and birds washed up on Tramore strand that are dumped out of nets.

very good point basspoint acording to lahinch aquarium triggerfish are solitary creatures and very territorial so the chances
of 11 of them in the one spot would be rare id go with dumped off a trawler

Me thinks that triggerfish ain't their speciality  Anytime I have encountered them they were in shoals of a dozen or more. It's a scream watching em scavageing the bait particals spat out by a conger shaking it's head on the surface or particiles washed from a dubby bag etc they behave almost like a shoal of pirana feeding on the slick :)

just reread it eric and you said,(surprised they havent showed up in good numbers yet)
to me that would mean they have showed up the only thing i left out was (good) but what does good mean,
i think if one got caught that would be good well at least it would be a start
you never know the way the marina is going they might start doing day angling permits on the empty berts

i have heard it quoted as evidence of global warming that trigger fish are now showing
up in Irish waters but I remember pulling lobster pot strings under loop head in the late 1970s
full of Triggers so i wouldn't say there has been any change.

There are always triggers washed up on kilkee beach and other west clare beaches on the
first autumn storm

Because the water temps are much lower in the irish sea than the s/w coast maybe not
as many triggers live there?

Thanks lads for all the feed back on this Topic. Triggers grind their teeth producing a "growling" sound when landed!
I have rarely caught single fish, they usually turn up in shoals.
jw is correct in that they usually turn up dead on West Clare beaches, Kilkee and Doughmore after the first Autumn storm.
I have seen many dead Triggers over the years on these beaches.
