Eric I've never float fished so please forgive my question!!!!! But what snood length would you use from the float and would you use a shot to hold the bait down under the surface? Or is it just free lined from the float?

no problem dfella, i use a pike waggler float which slides up and down the mainline, i use a stopknot made with power gum to stop the float sliding up to far, for the pier about an 8ft drop is ample for most occasions. i was pretty sure yesterday i was the only one using a flourocarbon leader  a size 4-6 hook is perfect for the mack also gives you a chance at the garfish that show up on the pier too

Funny it was garfish I was thinking of  I seen a program yesterday on Discovery Shed, Paul Meredith and he caught a garfish. The beaks look deadly with the all teeth. So you don't need to weight the hook end? The bait just weights/floats itself?
