Lahinch 4th/5th April

#1 Post by spindlefist »

Ppl: meself and the da

PART A: Time: 9pm-1am

Tide: flooding... High at bout 2am

Bait: Lug/razor/squid

Rigs: flappers , pennel and 1 up 1 down

result: 2 Bass, 1 a piece...

The report:
So this was my 3rd weekend in a row to venture to Lahinch or that neck of the woods, and finally, I got my first Bass!
My dad got his too, beat me to the post by a whisker, as I was unhooking his for him, I got an almighty wallop on my rod, but missed it by the time I had gotten to the rod... But got my fish bout 15 mins later...

Was by no means a monster, but It was a bass nonetheless.. had a few other good bites, lost 1 in close too.. Had to leave bout 1 am as the sea was trying to devour us, fairly rough weather...

My father had murder in his eyes when he landed his fish, but I explained the merits of catch and release and both fish went back to grow and fight another day..

PART B:
sunday 5th..

Had bait left over so went out to inagh estaury from 2pm- 4:30pm..
there were 2 other lads out but they had no luck,
After bout 30mins there I got a flounder on the Lug, 41cm, 1cm smaller than last weeks

He was not out of the water too long, and the hook didn;t appear to cause that much damage, came out fairly easy, despite the blood there, but the poor fish would not return, I tried to hold it there to get the water flowing, but was hard, again, very rough... Found it washed up 10 yards away 5 mins later, so dispatched it completely and brought it home, won;t go to waste, but prefer to C&R..

Off to Cork tomorrow, so going to try Youghal or cobh after work, or maybe ferrypoiint...
Anyone know where to get Crab/lug down in cork without havin to dig it, as time constraints do not allow for bait collection....
Also, is there an asian market down there? don't like to pay €4.50 for box of squid, when asia market does em for €1.95, same pack.
cheers,

Dáire

Well done on the bass!

I think its great to see small bass showing in Lahinch and well done on the C&R. There was a time not so long ago when it was practically a bass desert. According to what I've head on the grapevine, we all owe thanks for this slow recovery to a certain local skipper and his wife. The story was that a certain inshore fisherman used to net the beach routinely for "flats"...

A familiar story but clearly :D this one has the potential for a happy ending...
Kieran Hanrahan

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

You did well to get anything out of the estuary, I was down there with the lures at first light Saturday and it was like a river of choclate with all that dirty fresh water flowing. It should be fining down by now and throw out some good flatties.
The Truth is often stumbled upon by men, most of whom pick themselves up and hurry along as if nothing ever happened.
