South Galway Take Two 01.04.09

Tide: HT @ 22:05

Weather: mild evening gentle SSW

Bait: mackerel, herring, sandeel, squid & fresh limpets

Rigs: 3 hook flapper 1up 1down clipped

Results: blank




Report: Went back to try this new mark i'd found into darkness, had the 3 hook flapper under my feet and the clipped rig at distance. Nothing was happening so i collected some limpets as the foreshore is littered with their shells. Dropped some juicy limpets in close and and was getting little taps staright away turned on the big headlamp and spoked a fish that was about 2ft from my baits looked like a rockling then i finally got a knock on the distance rod just as the tide had peaked didn't feel like anything substanial about 15ft from the shore i lost him just saw a very white looking underside as he dived to the bottom gave it another 30mins after this but no joy. Turned on the big headlamp a few times as the water was crystel clear and every few mins about 6-8 silvery fish approx 1/4lb or 1/2lb size would show up in formation and dive for the kelp when the light hit them couldn't make out exactly what they were and ideas? might try some lures hear as the water is gin clear at the moment....

unlucky with the blank conor, seems to be a lot of blanking doing the rounds at the moment just shows we're all human i suppose . do you reckon the wee fish were whiting or coalies? i know when we fish some harbours jordan likes to cut up some mack into pea sized pieces and chuck them in. he then shines our big spot light into the water to watch all the tiddlers feast on the mack. they will be a bit shy at first but once a brave fish takes the mack the rest follow suit and don't seem to be bothered by the light at all. if anything the seem to be attracted to it. it's amazing just what's under your feet sometimes i always like to think that there's a big predatory fish watching all the tiddlers illuminated just on the fringes waiting to gobble one of em up. i have'nt got one of em yet, but when i do i'll be screaming it from the rooftops hope you have better luck next time man.

those herring do that formation fishing - the bay was full of them a few months back

otherwise its those coalies we never seem to catch!

Maybe it might fish better if there was a bit of a surf to stir up the sediment.

Thanks Al will give a couple of weeks till i try it again hopefully as the water temp picks up and some of those predators will come all the way into the bay. I'm going to try the other side of the bay on Monday to see what that throws up..... fingers crossed!!

Might of been herring i know they showed up across at the Docks a few weeks back. First thought was whiting or coalies but we also seem to just get the odd one of them every now and then, hopefully time will tell

Thanks yeah was happy to see signs of life there, mix of rocky outcrops, sand, boulders and patches of kelp should hold plenty of pollack when they start showing

Cheers going to try out a good few marks right in the bay over the next few months hopefully some of them will throw up few surprises

Thanks Frank the last night we fished it there was an onshore wind with some surf running and still didn't produce but it might still be a bit to early for good runs of fish coming that far into the bay, will stick with it till i hopefully figure out how it fishes. The one bait i didn't have with me was lug and Brian and myself spotted some cracking lug beds close by so next time will be armed with lug

Thats for sure last few sessions have been pretty dismal but guess thats the price you pay for trying new spots, a local skipper was telling me that trawlers are operating at the mouth of the bay at night time so hopefully this isn't effecting the inshore fishing, suppose when i fish the North side on Monday should know more.
