Fountainstown, Co Cork 01/04/2009

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me and Nik

Duration: 20:00 - 22:00

Tide: Hw 10-10.30pm I think

Weather: clear and chilly

Bait: mackerel, launce, razor

Rigs: 3 hook flappers, 4/0 pulleys

Results: Nik 2 dogs and some pin whiting, me 2 dogs and some pin whiting

Report: Nik had headed own to our most local beach, Fountainstown for a quick cast and to try out some small hook traces after seeing the possibilities the previous night. I joined him later after tales of a shoal of fish breaking the water, which were gone when I got down. Generally we'd expect dogs and whiting down there and that's what we got - a lot of small pins and some big doggies, which was nice as the old dogs have been in short supply recently in my experience anyway as they were my first of the year.
2019 Species (8): Whiting, Coalfish, Dogfish, Bass, Coalfish, Dab, Lesser Spined Sea Scorpion, 5 Bearded Rockling

Well done on your first dogfish of the year.
Any idea of what the "shoal of fish" were - mullet?

I thank you. Probably mullet, he couldn't see them to be sure, he was checking for spiky fins  . They were breaking the surface like mackerel apparently, but were big. Put it this way, I brought down a spinning rod just in case, but I figured they were probably mullet and brought down some bread with an idea to targetting them. Some lads with a small boat and some spinners headed over to them, but caught nothing. They were gone by the time I got there anyway.

i was on the rocks to the end of the path, to the left of the beach at low water on paddys day and there was loads of silver fish jumping. i had a spinning rod with me with me but nothing was taking. i was guessing they were either mullet or sea trout but that was just at a guess as they were a bit far out for me to reach or see properly. the spinners i had were only cheapy ones and a little light for my rod as i just wanted to test the mark out for snags and didnt expect anything to take them. might give it another go tho with better lures.

I fished there yesterday with a fly rod and all i saw were mullet .. hundreds of em, i put on a small beaded olive coloured fly and got a pull.. but it may have just got caught in one's back??
Dont know for sure... there were some crackin fish dere at low flooding.. right under my feet..
I also fished a beach nearby ( few miles away) for bass or pollock off some exposed rocks at low over kelp beds and didnt see a fish ....
