South Galway 28.03.09

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: frenchvisitor, corbyeire & myself

Duration: 15:00-18:30

Tide: Rising HT @ 18:18 height 4.99m

Weather: Dry and Sunny wind NW force 5-6

Bait: mackerel, herring, squid and sandeel

Rigs: various

Results: nada blank zilch

Report: corbyeire and myself arranged to meet frenchvisitor to introduce him to sea angling. We decided to try a mark i'd spotted on OSI maps after a magical mystery tour down mazey roads we eventually arrived at where the road to the mark should've been, we were about to give up and head off for another mark when i asked a local if he knew this side road we were looking for. Thankfully he pointed us in the right direction and what was showing as a public rd on OSI was infact a little boreen running at the back of someones cottage. The boreen opened out to reveal a cracking looking mark into deep water right out into Galway Bay even though we all blanked was happy enough to have found this mark (had been searching for it 3 times last year without success). Will fish it into darkness during the week as the tides will be spot on, might get some of the elusive Galway Bay Bass from here later in the year ;)
Nice to meet you by the way Alex i'll PM you my mobile if you fancy getting out later in the week...

Hard luck on the blank, but it sounds like you have found a good mark - hopefully it will fish well after dark.
On Saturday I went to check out a new mark that I had identified on the OSI website - it looked like there was a small lane going down to the coast - there may have been a lane there 50 years ago but it was now just an overgrown grassy track and a long walk down hill. I walked down it (didn't bring any fishing gear) and found a small sandy cove between the cliffs - looks like another good mark - and probably isn't fished much if at all. A spot for bass in the summer I reckon :D :D
Cod season Winter 2013/14: 117 cod (best fish: 6.5 lbs)
Cod season Winter 2014/15: 193 cod (best fish: 4.25 lbs)

Bass Totals:
2007: 1
2008: 37
2009: 120
2010: 44
2011: 151
2012: 79
2013: 20
2014: 19

I did offer to take you to where the fish are  We had seven flounder, a schoolie a dog and the ray in the end but but the pier is going to be unfishable during the day and early evening due to somebody putting a photo of an eleven and a half pound bass being caught there in the local tackle shop

I will be out in North Clare early tomorrow, hope I can find something decent there.
