West Cork Beach, 23/03/2009

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: myself and Nik

Duration: 21:00 - 01:00

Tide: LW around 22:00

Weather: cold westerly breeze easing to calm 'warm' conditions as the tide filled

Bait: razor

Rigs: pulleys and 3 hook flappers

Results: Nik - nothing, me - whiting and a bass

Report:

Headed out to our favourite West Cork mark more in hope than expectation. I have been having a shocking year so far fishing wise with more blanks in January (and Feb...and March) than I had in the whole of last year so wasn't too hopeful, but Nik was.

First cast was in the water for two minutes when my rod started banging away. Left it for a minute, still banging away walked down to the water, still banging away, started my retrieve and lost it

About a minute later Nik had a slack line bite which resulted in nothing again. No fish, but things were looking promising..

Typically, nothing much then happened for the next two and a half hours, I landed a whiting on my second rod that I'd chucked out and we had one or two knocks and baits coming back stripped. Just before midnight with the tide on the turn, my rod started hopping again, then it stopped and Nik's started jumping - I was gutted. We both reeled in, to find that in fact I had actually hooked a bass which had managed to wrap around Nik's line, which left Nik gutted

We had been going to leave before this point, but with the tide filling and the prospect of more bass we stayed on for another hour or so, but to no avail.

Pleasant evening, fishing fortunes looking to have taken a turn for the better and managed to put my first bass of the year back a month to March.

Well done on your first bass of the year. Nik must have been well p!ssed off.

February and March have been fairly poor alright - I did OK in January but since then fish have been very scarce. But hopefully this week with the strong tides and winds it will improve.

Nik should stick to the darts!
A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.
