GREYSTONES ROCKS 13-03-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:ME

Duration:4-10pm

Tide:low 6-42pm

Weather:windy, raining,

Bait:lug,rag,mack

Rigs:flappers,

Results:coalfish, flounder/dab, whiting

Report:set up at the rocks at 4ish, wind wasnt too bad and it was dry at that stage. I was well wrapped up in the imax suit so i was comfortable enough , even when the rain got heavier later on. Met dfella from the site who had a chat ,then set up across the cove from me at the steps. Only got one fish during daylight, a coalie, and in fact it was dusk ,about 6pm. This was followed by a nice flounder about a half hour later as it got dark, at least i thought so last night when i landed it, though looking at the photo today it looks like a dab,,whats your opinion lads? I know at this stage i should be able to tell the difference  ,, but last night i automatically thought flounder. Both fish caught near the low tide. At this stage the rain and wind started to get heavier, and i remembered a few years ago looking at a couple of guys at Dun Laoighaire fishing in the lashing rain and thinking they needed their heads examined   ,,,,,yet here was i   I almost enjoyed being out in the rain,,,,,at least i could have a piddle as there were no walkers around   I started to get the tell tale whiting bites,,,but no hook ups. I got about 4 whiting in all but out of about 15 bites. I tried letting them hook themselves, but they wouldnt,,,,then tried to strike but i must have a delayed reaction or something as this didnt work either  The ones i did get,,,i'm convinced they followed the bait in and were caught on the retrieve. On the plus side i reeled in 2 weights,1 x4oz and 1x 3oz,,,thanks whoever you are  The rain stopped about 9pm and it cleared up ,with the moon making an appearance, plenty more whiting bites, and one good non whiting single pull which didnt produce anything so i left at 10 pm as i'd run out of bait

Nice session Dave. I was having hell with snags where I set up. I was losing a rig every second cast. So just after dark we decided to head around to the beach. We were straight into the whiting and I was straight into a birds nest on my reel! Not a great session but at least I got back out.

That looks like a flounder to me but I remember asking the same question a few months back.

nice fishing dave :P . nice wee dab too. if you're ever unsure if it's a dab just rub his skin from tail to head. the skin of a dab rubbed that way will feel rough where as a flounder will be slimey  i hope you've left some for me tomorrow      i still have'nt got one this year yet    . i'll be down from 2 or 3pm where we fished the last time. i think fishface is arriving after 6pm. i'll fish it through to midnight then scoot up to clogherhead and give it a go til dawn. hope you can make it man and well done again :P

It's a Flounder as it's lateral line is straight. A Dab has a semi-circular twist in the latheral line of a dab before the gills

Well done for venturing out on Friday 13th :!: :!:

I reckon its a flounder - as Donagh mentioned it appears to have a straight lateral line, I can see any sign of the semi circular curvature of the line on that photo.
