Penn Senator 6/0

Im being offered a Penn Senator 114h 6/0 reel from a guy in work, he bought it while in the states a few years ago, and has only used it a few times, he has showed me a few pictures and it looks in good nick, before he brings it in, for me to look at, I want to find out if there is anything in particullar that I should look out for, any common faults etc?

Any help or advise would be much appreciated

TBH im currently using a 15 to 20 yr old Mitchell 624 which I got when I was about 12/13. I dug it out last summer before my first boat trip since I was about 17. Fishermanum1 very kindly serviced it for me, and its working fine. But the guy in work is looking £50 for his reel so I reckon at that price I would be stupid not to go for it, even if it is far too big.

A bulletproof reel, just a couple of things to look for.
1, check if it has red or black sideplates, you want the reel with the red ones, it has a faster retrieve than the one with black plates.
2, check if the star drag has been wound up tight, this could mean the drag washers are crushed, and you might need to replace them ($12).
just a tip, always wind your star drag right off when you finish fishing... every time, it will benifit you if you ever catch a fish that you need to use the drag on.

Other than that the reel is bullet proof.

i used to have a mitchel 624 about 20 years or so ago aswell it was a white real with a steel spool that was i think around a 4/0. also had a mitchell with a plastic spool dont no the number but it was an AP model no brakes used to cast from the beach with it.

6/0 wont be a whole lot bigger than what you have

Dave Jolly hit most points to look for above although you can also get red side plates on the slower geared models the fast retrieve model is a "H" so "114H" and not just "114" which is the slow retrive.. another very common fault is the "torpedo" on the handle seizes up so make sure that's free spinning on the shaft and that the shaft is not turning itself which will eventually shear the handle itself off. The dog clutch can wear on one too so make sure when the spool is engaged that the handle only turns one way!

If it was only used a couple of times it should be OK and a visual inspection will tell you a lot!

Penn seator are a very good reel, very little can go wrong bar a dog spring like in all penns.
I have purchased one myself about 2 years ago in the states very cheap @ the time.
However they are very heavy & are for big fish like skate in these waters.
a better reel for normal sea fishing is the abu Garcia 10000 or a Penn 4/0.
