Planning a Fishing trip to Ireland

Hi

First of all, please excuse my poor english!

A friend and I are planning a fishing trip to Ireland, and we were wondering where there are good places for us to go, and when it would be the best time of the year.

We are planning for week in ireland, with 5 days to fish, and we would like to go out on a boat 3-4 days and perhaps try freshwater or shorefishing for the rest. We would like to try to catch as many different species as possible, and especially conger, skates, sharks and other things "exotic" to us Danes who normally only fish for cod and plaice.

So the big question is where to go, and when to do it!

Any suggestions?

Hi Michael, welcome on board!

I may be a bit biased! You should consider Cork for your trip. There are many different options whether you want charter fishing or small boat fishing. The beauty of Cork is that if the weather is bad you can fish safely within the harbour area.

A few hours of reseach, and I have found out that fishing appears to be good in Ireland

There seems to be so many possibilties, and it's getting even harder to pick!

Cork seems to be a good choice though, since planes from Denmark all go to Dublin, and from there catching a connection plane to Cork seems to be pretty easy. Also there seems to be a good number of boats going out from Cork, so we could join a tour. Renting a self-drive boats looks interesting, but i believe that requires somewhat more knowledge about the area to be really fun.

Is the fishing good from all coasts in Ireland? Because taking a boat out from Dublin would be even easier, if we considered a weekend trip

Hi,

While I agree that Cork is a great fishing venue, you might want to look at Wexford in the South East for a weekend visit. It's a two hour drive from Dublin Airport and there are many charter operators at Kilmore Quay and Rosslaire.

If you fly in to Dublin in the morning you can be fishing that afternoon. Also if the weather is bad which might cause charter cancellations at other venues you may still be able to get the boat out into the sheltered bay at wexford.

Has to be Cork Michael the East coast has very little to offer especially around Dublin I know I fish there am based in Dun Laoghaire just outside Dublin.
As Jim says if you get bad weather the fishing inside Cork Harbour is spectacular.

Hi All

Thanks for the great help so far!

I think we have decided on trying a weekend in Cork around july, since Cork is easy to get to and offers a good variety of fish. I haven't decidede on which charter to use, but i think i'll try the Deora Dé first.

The weekend trip will also be a "fact-finder" mission, because in Cork it looks like we can rent boats, gear and even a landrover and those possibilities are worth looking at. We would prefer using our own gear, but since we don't know the area or much about the fish it would be a good and easy way to learn a bit about stuff.

Hopefully a good weekend trip should prepare us for a week later in the season, perhaps around august, where we hopefully are much better prepared for some Irish fishing adventure and a few pint

have to agree with the lads, cork harbour is the best option as jim says but i also recommend some deep wreck fishing.
you could do something like two days from cork harbour and you could go to the likes of union hall or castletownbere, thats only if the weather was settled. if you get out on to the wrecks you could have big coalies, pollack, conger and big ling.
this is just from my experience at the above locations.

Sounds like a good idea if we can get a whole week in ireland! It would be nice to try some different things, and i rekon we would also try to find a spot for some surfcasting.. Denmark i flat as a pancake, and we don't have cliffs and deap water off the coast, so that would be a whole new experience too
