Bait in Kinsale?

#1 Post by cathaloc »

Great forum ye have here, I just came across it through Google today and have learned more since than I have in the previous season!

Anyway, I have a charter booked out from Kinsale for this Friday (28th). We'll be around the ling rock and all the other usual spots. What would be the 'best' bait to bring along? I have a few frozen Mackerel but would like to bring a few other bits and bobs along on the day.

Also, I wont have time to dig any bait so would someone be able to recommend a good place to get bait in the Cork area?

If heading for the lings, apart from mackerel, a few rag worm wouldn’t go astray. If not possible make sure that you have jelly worms or shads. There were plenty pollack on the rocks a few weeks back.
No doubt you will be at anchor at some stage so a few crab should attract ballans, the rag will cover this if crab are scarce.
Enjoy the day!

Cheers for the advice lads! I have a good few shads and jellys alright as i was given a big box of them. I'm not suite sure how to fish them but I'll give them a bash alright for the craic.

Gotta get on the phone to that guy now to get some bait organised!

Well, that went well! :) Ended up ground fishing for the first while which produced a couple of conger, a ling, the inevitable pouting and a few wrasse. Then we switched to using shads for pollack on very light tackle. Great craic! I got 10-12 Pollack, weighing from 5-9lbs approx. Some fight off the pollack on the light gear!

Cheers to everyone for the advice

Were you out on the Sundance Kid. Was out my self on friday, first launch since the small boats, hoping for a few cod or haddock had a chat with the lads on Sundance Kid. Fishing was p**s poor on the drift. stopped off on the way to the lings had 15 mackeral in two drops. Off to a flying start but that's where it ended. Only for a blast of whiting on the way home saved the day.
