Long flowing trace.......

#1 Post by PaddyB »

I tried for the first time on Sunday to fish a rag on a single hook on a long flowing trace of about 5ft to target pollack over reefs on about 40 to 50ft of water. However, on retreiving my line I found that the flowing trace from the boom had tangled around the main line, this happened twice, and then I ended up cutting the trace back to about 2 ft long. This prevented tangles and I hit 4 good wrasse in fairly quick sucession, but no pollack, what do I need to do to be able to fish a long flowing trace and prevent tangles with the main line?

I tend to use the plastic tube booms and find that the they save on tangles most of the time.

Shakespeare do a green one but best bet is to buy the tube and link swivels from UK Hooks and make your own by bending after heating tube in steam from the kettle.

Sometimes if you let it down too quick the trace will come up around the main line. Try let it down slower might help.

Thanks all, was out again yesterday, and a combination of improvements lead to no tangles,
longer boom (8"), smaller lead, slower decent, and a 'wee flick' of the line out from the boat as you start the decent! Worked a treat every time!
