Nokia 95 series

Ok not tackle a such but if you are like me and think you never get decent fish when you bring your camera (and the fish are always smaller when you have a scales handy

) this is the phone to have.

I went out to get an iPhone but was peeved when I saw different tarrifs for the iPhone with apple getting a cut from every call Also you would need child's fingers to use the keyboard and the O2 bloke really put me off as he was not a fan. I am with vodafone anyway I went to have a look at what they had, they are giving the n95s away to compete with the iPhones and I have to say they are excellent.

The big thing is the 5m camera with flash and an 8G memory, GPS and Nokia maps and Internet access not nearly as sexy looking as the apple but with all the above it is possible to post reports as you fish with a photo and the exact coordinates

ah mobile technology...

i can do the same with my N70

just need to add a program onto the phone and keep my bluetooth GPS reciever turned on..

i know what you mean about the iphones too..

wouldnt be the first time i have put up reports with photo's attached while i've been out fishing

at the moment the nokia N series phones are the top phones at the moment, even with the iphone about, there are still a few bugs that need to be worked out of the iphone where as with the N series they have mostly been eliminated..

as for gps, nokia maps are a bit behind, the best ones i have found are route66 mobile and tom tom mobile, route66 uses navtec maps and the latest version R66 mobile8 only came out a month ago and is the best to date, but will only work with OS symbian 6 v3 (n95 included)

very handy for finding marks that are the other side of the country (have about 50 marks around the country listed on my phone

)

steve, I presume I can get tom tom maps or the other on the www and up load to the phone (or you can send me your maps with the marks included

).

Vodafone (or should I say we as I was one of those idiots who didn't sell eircom shares on the day of issue

) are giving the N95s away, just mention apple and they will knock it down.

The only issue I wouldhave is I prefer a viewfinder than looking at the screen to capture an image. The screen is hard to see on a sunny day and impossible wearing polaroid sunglasses..

Marno, I am due an upgrade on my Vodafone N70 and have been looking at the N95, if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay as I have seen them advertised at around 300 Euro which is still way to steep for me.

What about the battery life on the N95, does it last you all day when you are using some of the applications like camera, GPS etc. My N70 is a bit of a let down on this and if I keep it I will get a spare battery I think. Mind you this is my second one as the first one got soaked by a freak wave down the waders on a Mayo beach the first week I had it.

a phones battery life is very dependant on how you use your phone, i can get about 3 days use with my N70 after a charge, but i'f i use camera or play games or use the satnav it will reduce the time by half.

another thing that will reduce the power on your battery fast is when the phone does its network search, with it being a high end phone it will always look for the fastest network connection i.e. 3G, but if you live where there is no 3G it will be constantly trying to search for one, which can drain the battery fairly fast, you'ld get about a day out of it

the way to cure this is to goto menu/tools/settings/network and change network mode from dual to GSM, this will stop it looking for the faster 3G connection and give your battery an extra day or so worth of power

with the N95 4Gig and 8Gig models, both of these have an internal hard drive, so depending on how you use the phone you can really reduce the power, i have a N91 with a 4Gig hard drive and i could get about 8 hours out of it playing music and about 5 hours using satnav on it,

so if you are using you phone for more than just a phone.. go on ebay and get a few spare batteries. you should be able to pick up 2 batteries and a charger for around E10

Thanks for the info Steve,

I like my N70 a lot and take loads of photos, check emails, surf the web, posting on blog and flickr etc with it. You know what it's like when you see a new shiny gadget like the N95 and I have sort of talked myself into upgrading even though I know I don't really need it. The 5 MP camera and 8 Gig storage would be nice though.

Guy's ive had a N95 as past 5 months, they are indeed a great phone only to be let down by battery life.

The camera is great without doubt, have taken some cracking pixs with it, detail is unbelievable for a camera phone.

The gps also comes in handy, just punch in the post code and it will talk you there!! although you have to subscribe to the server, if i remember it is £50 for the year.

But the battery lets the whole thing down id be lucky to get a day out of it, that big screen just zaps the power.

I got mine free on the vodahone network, with a couple of freebies thrown in, hands free kit etc.
