west pier dun laoghaire

Plan to do a bit of fishing tomorow , with the weather being nice and having nothing better to do I might as well.

The problem is all i've got with me in dublin is a v.light 9ft spinning rod so my options are somewhat limited. Figure dun laoire will offer a chance to target some mini species or maybe flats and whiting, something within the capabilities of my gear anyway.
I may be too late in asking this but.....Was just wondering if the back of the west pier (by the steps) is a suitable place to try my luck? I understand it to be quite the spot for conger but having never fished here don't know what sort of ground it is? It looks to be relativly clean a few yards out (presume its rough close in) but is this the case?
Intend to fish late afternoon/early evening so if anybody is about feel free to join me.

the back of the west is full of the whiting species at the mo

a cast of 30 to 50 yards puts you into the clean ground just remember to reel in fast to avoid the rough ground,,,

pleanty of conger to be had in close if your up for it,,,,


anyway enjoy it can be a good spot at times

hi col, i might be fishing killiney around whiterock for flounder and coalies, who knows an early schoolie,conditions will be spot on for a spinning rod and 2 hook flapper with light leads. if ya cant make it,the west pier is hit and miss, in fact more miss. fished off the back of it today on the boat after college with jack and got nothing, not even a pin, also fished it the other night with a few lads for conger and kept getting dropped though there where whiting at distance. the ground is rough close in clearing to sand about 20 yards out, beware the rats

The rod is only rated to one once so at least even small whiting should register a bite. Thanks for the invite eric (and the heads up on the rats ), I'll stick with the plan of heading to dun laoire purely because I've been telling myself since september that I'd fish here but have yet to actualy get off my behind and do it Of course you're welcome to join me in dun laoire if you wish.
Will miss a lot of fishing this summer with being away so plan to make up for it now and get out on a regular basis, pity its prob the worst time of year for it but ahwell. Might even head back out on Thursday, twice in one week, now that will b a shock to the system!!

Well, I blanked! Fished between 4 and 7ish this evening with fresh lug around the back of the wast pier and the baits came back completely untouched each cast. Timing wasn't the greatest as the tide was falling, forgot to even check the tide table before I left.

Glad I went all the same, it was comfortable fishing and in nice weather so apart from the lack of fish it was good to get out.

Plan to head back out here again on Thursday or may try somewhere else.

If your heading back there, dont fish off the back of west pier its useless for anything bar congor! i'd fish straight down the end into the deeper water or else into the harbour to try for flats and whiting! used to be plenty of scorpion fish on the float to decent size, float works well inside the harbour for most species would also be good with your spinning rod
