Grip weights

Hey All,
Gonna make some of my own grip weights (finally

) but am a bit confused

with regards to the grip wires themselves - are they left in when pouring the lead into the mould - if so will they not set in place???

Is there a knack or a trick to it?

The grip wires are put in afterwards. A wire of a slightly larger diameter is used during the pouring process.

Or you can use the same wires but cover them in soot before inserting them, this way they remove after you've poured the lead, it's also a good idea to give the inside of your mould a coating of soot, candles are perfect.

Candle soot on the inside of the mold will save a whole load of hassle, no more leads stuck inside and the mold will fill cleaner too.

One tip I never seen on that thread was DO NOT to let water come into contact with the pan of molten lead....it will explode and possibly take your eye out....the worst offender is scrap yard lead pipe...the collectors sometimes fill the pipe with water, bend the ends over and get a better weight per euro from the dealer......you start to melt that stuff down in a pan and see how high it goes when it explodes....be careful!!

john, make sure you make the leads in a well ventilated area..

the fumes are highly toxic especially when heated above 900 degrees C
