Casting with a Mutliplier

Hi all,

This is my first post, I've only just joined the forum. I just got a new beachcaster along with a mutliplier reel (Abu Garcia 6500 C3 Hi Speed Mag) and am having great difficulty in casting using it. Birds Nests galore and when I do get it out it, it doesn't get out very far .

I know people will say that I should have got a fixed spool reel, but I want to master this bugger. What I really need is a crash course in casting multipliers. I fish the beaches around North Wexford, South Wicklow so if anyone on the forum intends to fish between Christmas and the New Year and could give me a lesson or put me on to someone I'd really appreciate it.

The reel was an expensive piece of kit and I don't want to give up on it yet.

Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Try to stop it from happening in the first place.... when your just getting used to casting a multiplier to use a heavier line....on a 6500 most people use 15lb line.....use 20lb or even 25lb......it cuts your distance down but it will help you get used to the reel and then you can drop down to thinner line once you have more control.

starting out learning put heaver mono on 25 OR 30. I would only half full the reel till you get used to it gently thum the spool just before your lead hits the water should prevent a birdsnest but you will get a few starting out a multiplier is lighter and sits nicer on a rod

Don't rush into casting with a power cast, just keep it easy, nice and smooth.

im in wicklow myself and will be able to give you a hand some day if ya like but dont be expecting to cast far lol ill give you a hand with the basics of the reel

I'll definitely take you up on that offer as the reel seems very complicated to me. The guy in the tackle shop gave me a quick run through but when I tried using it I found it very difficult to cast with.

The only way I could get any distance was by adjusting the star reel which I know is for the drag but adjusting the mags and other bits did nothing for me. There seems to be a lot of adjustable bits on the reel and for a beginner with Multipliers it's a nightmare.

Let me know when you intend hitting the beach down Wicklow way, I heard the South Beach in Arklow is fishing well for Whiting.

Don't give up on it. I use ABU multipliers for everything - from float fishing for mullet to deep sea angling.

Some tips:

1) As mentioned, don't overload the reel with line and make sure it's not too heavy. 18-20Lb line will do for practice casting with a 3-4 OZ lead. If the line is loaded over the lip of the spool - it's too much. It should be an a max a couple of MM from the lip.

2) Make sure that with the brakes on, the lead drops slowly to the ground and when there, the spool stops turning. Don't use the drag to control the cast. Check the manual.

3) Make sure your casting action is smooth. Try a simple casting over the head and make sure it's one smooth action - multiplier reels work on several different principles, one of which is centrigual force - a jerky action will slow down the lead relative to the spool - the spool keeps turning churning out line that's going nowhere- result is a bird's nest.

4) Don't think you're in a competition for distance casting and do the whole Geoff Capes-on-the-toilet grunting thing, busting a gut trying to launch the lead as far as the horizon. Concentrate on technique first. You can look and sound like a complete tool later.

i got laughed off the east pier by the old timers for using a multi while float fishing for macks a fews years back. they have a different word for a tackle tart

I use an ABU Atlantic 403 and an Ambassadeur 7000 for mack fishing off the old coal quay in Dun Laoghaire in the late 70's, very successfully. I always made a statement with my tackle (ooh, er missus).

Thanks Denis for the crash course in using the multiplier. No more birdies as of yet, just have to start working on distance now.

Not getting it out very far but hopefully that'll come in time.
