Anyone tried fly fishing for whiting out there?

Whiting NO but Cod - albeit in the Baltic. Had one late Sunday afternoon (about 3pm) on a pink  shrimp intended for sea-trout.

Over here they tend to come in close to the shore about an hour after the sun has gone down - I used to use black flies (like a wooly bugger) but I have now come to the conclusion that the colour doesn't seem to matter.

I have even taken them on gurglers! Great fun on a #5 weight.
