Salmon?

#1 Post by grangebellew »

Was in Greenore (Co. Louth) yesterday fishing for imaginary mackerel and saw a huge salmon jump out of the water twice just a few feet from the shore. What's the best way to target Salmon from the sea? Many Thanks...

i know a few people who swear by float-fishing with prawn as bait in the sea. best of luck to you mate, they are hard enough to hook into in a river!

salmon at sea

#4 Post by kieran »

Hi

Very hard to get them to concentrate on food once they are on the homeward leg, most salmon caught in rivers are reacting in annoyance to the lure rather than feeling hungry... so I am told... anyhow around here they use freelined sandeels, live, apparently very effective if you know where...

FWIW...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Salmon? Their no salmon, it's sea trout jumping their beating the flies on them, as you prop noticed it landed on it's side. The fish aren't feeding. You might be able to catch them on prawns of foul hook then..... Tight lines

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

Anyhoo, plenty of ways to catch Salmon/Sea Trout with having to foul hook them.

what the hell is going on here .... u would have a better chance of catching a sea bass in lough corrib ?
there are some very odd reports of grilse [small salmon averaging 3-6ibs ,they can be as small as 1 ib or as large as 8 ibs] they are one sea winter fish.... very rarely they are caught by lads bass fishing with lures ... i have heard of 2 ever in the waterford area ... the small salmon are somewhat unpredictable and can display similar habits to sea trout ..what i mean is that grilse are sometimes caught by course anglers on maggots or by trout anglers on small trout flies !! they are not something to target at sea .... thats for sure !
