Richard Shakespeare is the Staff Officer trying to explain the rationale behind the proposal.

One thing I found rather amusing is that on one hand he is heavily involved in the (excellent) Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures, and on the other he proposes to heavily regulate angling, an activity popular with people of different social and cultural backgrounds.

Looking back over this thread, no formal complaints have been lodged to DLRCoCo regarding angling (see quote in Indo article), and I cannot understand why the first instinct of the officials of DLRCoCo is to regulate it. This is without consultation with

Failte Ireland
Eastern Regional Fisheries board
Central Fisheries Board
Blue Flag Organisation
Irish Federation of Sea Anglers
Local Angling Clubs
etc etc

Hi all,
BBC will be interviewing Tom tomorrow, Tuesday 18th, at Killiney beach. This was to have happened earlier but was deferred.
If people are free (I'm not :( ) , it would be good to have as many anglers fishing on the beach as possible. I guess people should aim to be set up by 1.45 pm.

i don't know ive got lectures, should probably go to them! :cry: if my my practicals for the afternoon are called off il cycle down as fast as possible and set up camp.

Just received some useful (and positive) correspondence from one councillor. Apparently there have been problems with "youngsters" casting towards the sails on yachts in the harbour (Dun Laoghaire??) and causing "considerable damage".

Anecdotal, or is there positive proof ? Is someone squirming so much to justify themselves now that we have the pressure on? Anyhow, I'd have thought such antisocial behaviour would warrant calling the Guards, not legislating against the entire sport.

Imagine, some gurriers kick a football through a window so the Council makes playing Soccer illegal.........

No, I would believe this. The councillor is against the current proposal. She described this incident to illustrate that there was no widespread problem with angling and that was just a particular problem within the harbour.

I'm lost - the proposal covers beaches, not the harbor. So now there's an issue with yachts, and not swimmers? This sounds like complete nonsense.

Btw, Fishing is already banned in part of the harbour - off the "new" marina breakwater for example, which is unreasonable too, in my opinion, but something else to fight.

I think this is an important point. If the executive can't provide the Council with a concrete reason for implementing the ban, then the proposal starts to look like either a "Monday Morning" job or a personal crusade by someone.

I'm not familiar with the Marina there. Is it privately owned/operated, which would allow the operator to restrict activities?

I suggest that someone checks out the guy who heads the cleaning teams on a Sunday morning, I think honestly it's his personal crusade.

The reason I think this is the reaction I had from him the morning he confronted me, he also had the gall to lie to me and tell me that fishing was, I quote, "Not allowed" between the flags, when I asked who says, he said " I said", so his aggressiveness and lies make me think he's the one driving this.

Dun Loaghaire Rathdown County Council have banned playing ball games in most of the estates around my area. no messing.

id say what has happened is that a sail ship probably came to close to the harbour wall and perhaps some one was casting out at the time and hit the boat. i think it would be an understatement to suggest that a few of the members of Dun Laoghaire yacht club would have a say in Council Decissions

but i think its a matter for the harbour police rather than the council
