All good stuff lads, and in the meantime, can I suggest a few of you locals getting down to that beach today or tomorrow and fishing it, to establish beyond doubt your claim!

Guys. I support Tom Lillis on this one.
I will also be writing to the Angling Council on this matter as I am worried that this might become the thin end of the wedge.
In the meantime a cool head what is required.
I will give Tom any help that he may require.
Regards.
Timothy O Driscoll.

Hi all,

Thank you T. I appreciate your comment and those of every one else. I am glad anglers are still capable of getting excited about issues and it is a really good sign for the future. However with all of the daily hits i am sorry that more of the viewers / members and visitors don't log on and make them self's known. Now is the time to sign up!!! Lets get involved everyone. As the new guy at ANGLING COUNCIL of IRELAND I want every one involved and I hope to shortly offer the members of this club and "EXCELLENT" SITE a deal whereby the work done by Kieran and jd on this project will be recognized as "THE LEADING SITE" for all angling in Ireland. Sign up soon and Benefit (if that's ok Kieran& jd ...WE have work to do). LETS GET ON WITH IT. "PRESERVING THE PRESENT PROTECTING THE FUTURE" We can work in partnership with anyone and are more than willing to do so but please don't try to ignore us. Tom Lillis

I was thinking about the potential for petitions to influence our great political minds, and even if we got all of us who do regularly fish the numbers in ireland may not be all that large. However if it were a matter of collecting as many signatures as possible, we should also aim to garner support from the wider public, i'm thinking specifically of all those expert fishermen / women who are always ready to offer their (often dubious) expertise no matter what beach/rock / pier you fish from , we'd quickly have a 10 fold increase in signatures if each of us were to take a form out with us whenever we were out and about....

Has anyone thought about telling the Irish Angler?
Maybe they could offer help/support in light of the implications of this.

Could I suggest letting the UK angling mags and newspapers know what's going on. I'm sure you would get plenty of support from UK Anglers, especially if the proposed legislation should catch on in other areas where perhaps it will get less attention.

Done. David is on his holidays but Mike is aware of it...
I will ask him to link in with Tom (tigerfish) et al

Someone else should contact the other magazine in Sligo. I would only I have lost his contact details?

Thanks

Ok well I tried google, and the dlrcoco site and can't find anything, but it looks like they will be looking to restrict fishing heavily due to the criteria for blue flag beaches.

* An adequate number of lifeguards and/or lifesaving equipment must be available at the beach
* First aid equipment must be available on the beach
* There must be management of different users and uses of the beach so as to prevent conflicts and accidents
* An emergency plans to cope with pollution safety risks must be in place
* There must be safe access to the beach
* The beach area must be patrolled
* A supply of potable drinking water must be available on the beach
* A minimum of one Blue Flag beach in each municipality must have access and toilet facilities provided for disabled persons
* Map of the beach indicating different facilities must be displayed
http://www.blueflag.org/Criteria/Beaches

I think the point above is the one anglers will fall foul of, the beach has blue flag status this year again so they're obviously going to try to keep it that way.

It will be interesting but on the basis of the blue flag standard I reckon they'll probably get it through, but still let's wait and see what the proposals say.

<edit>If I remember I'll give them a call tomorrow to find out if they published the proposals anywhere, I happen to have a day off and may have time to do it.

Lots of other beaches with blue flags do not ban angling (Courtown, Rosslare, Curracloe, Duncannon, Clonea, ...), as far as I know.

Yeah but obviously this is open to local interpretation

* There must be management of different users and uses of the beach so as to prevent conflicts and accidents

That's a pretty wide statement, I dunno if there are further stipulations or detail behind that. I'd speculate that if they can show a local bye-law banning angling in certain spots surely that would make a part of the blue flag inspection very easy, and someone there seems to be fanatical about it, certainly the bloke leading the cleaning team I met on the beach on the Sunday morning when he approached me.

After the council publishes their proposal, it might be worth contacting the Department of Art, Sport and Tourism, Bord Fáilte and the Central and Eastern Regional Fisheries Boards.

These bodies are all involved in selling The Angling Product to tourists. How will it look if local councils start closing the shore to visiting anglers?
