Tope rod?

Lads having to change the roller tip on my shinmano and hope to try for a tope or 2 after the conger next weekend so my question is which rod for the tope as Iam sorted for the conger? *1 my leeda 2xL 12-20lb with penn220gto or *2 "fun rod" - mitchell star 20-30lb with okuma beachcaster 380 reel ????

I usually use Shimano Beastmasters, in 12 and 20lb versions. The 12lb rod has no problem with Tope in the 30lb - 50+lb range. Why go heavier?
