Report: 7 boats travelled to kerry for an impromptu species hunt over the weekend. the weather on sat was good wind wise, but wet. we all launched at the ferry to valentia island, and then motored up to the new marina in the town. Its a great facility, easy access, and all the things you need to wash the boat down, Plus a great supply of large mussel bait on the pontoons!!
Day one saw our boat get 12 species, the fishing was not fantastic, but patchy, though it was great to explore new areas, and find new marks.
wemanaged to get the most on day one, no thanks to out 'mate' donal d pitching a nice bullhuss over the side ! ( it was agreed before the comp that Lesser spotted dogs, rays, and conger would not be bought back to the scales, emphasis on th LESSER spotted dogfish, nic e one donal!!
day 2 saw a dramatic improvement on the weather, and the fishing improved a little, though mack bait proved very hard to find!
we managed 3 new species , thornback, plaice and lsd on the second day.
overall the 2 days collectively 18 species were caught, not bad considering, that the first time the small boats comp was held in cork, 14 species won the event!, now its 27!!!!
on day 3 we went sharking off the skelligs, ideal weather, good dubby, but no sharks, so we headed to our new found haddock mark and picked up some fine haddock to 4lbs.
A great weekend, and some great company, will be heading that way again next year.
regards
screeming
