SAI Tope expedition 21/7/7 Carrigaholt

This is to get organised for the club tope fishing trip. The plan is to fish the beal bar in the shannon estuary, about 2 miles south east of carrigaholt castle and other tope marks in the vicinity. The tide is very stong here, about 4knots on the spring ebb. We have the best boat of the fleet http://www.fishandstay.com/boat/ booked for the neaps.

My own view is that 5 is an ideal number for fishing at anchor in the strong tide, two uptide and three downtide. If there are a lot of lads interested we could try and get another boat

I forgot to mention bait. We should bring a backup supply of mackerel in case the shoals of fresh bait decide to be awkward on the day. An hour or two steaming up and down the estuary chasing the shoals would be better spent with slightly inferior frozen bait fished at the perfect tide stage at the tope mark.

About the tope trip, 6 is fine on the boat and I don't rate frozen bait for
tope, never seen it work. If you want to bring bait get it from the shore
the evening before or early in the morning. Anyway mackerel should be well
up the river by then.

You can safely assume this is going ahead. I'll double check on thursday, but unless you hear from me we're on. It's sheltered estuary fishing, so even if the wind is gale force, no problem, except setting the anchor is a bit trickier as the boat will drift too quickly. There will be none of the mad rollercoaster ride stuff.

Windguru is giving calm winds, though I wouldn't trust it this far ahead.

The skipper is always on time and will be getting everything ship shape from 8:30, so the departure time will be 9:00am sharp.

I will try for some macks from shore on friday as a reserve bait if anyone is around?

I know the painted rays come in close to Doughmore in July, so if anyone is staying for some shore fishing that might be worth a try?

The skipper asked me to pass on the following tip regarding tackle:

The biggest problem he finds is that someone using braid hooks a good fish and bang the line parts. The reason is the bottom is very abrasive here and the braid has been weakened by touching it. He advises the use of mono, or a very long mono leader.

From my own limited experience, I once hooked a good tope off greystones on a reel with braid and mono leader. When it saw the boat it got a fright and took off and the leader broke. Ever since then I use mono for the added stretch and loosen the drag when it sees the boat and might take off again.

i have 50lb braid and a 30ft 60lb leader, if he decides to run at 20 ft from the boat, ive got 10 already on the reel so hopefully this should be suficient

Yes the weather is looking good! Mackerel shouldn't be a problem.

Dave,

the advice from the man who does this every day is mono straight through. I think he has 30lb on his reels, so 25 lb should be fine. Basically, the bottom is gravelly/corally so you need abrasion resistance.

If you go the braid route, the leader knot can be a major weakness. My own experience is uni, grinner albright are worthless and a bimini can slide around. I would use a four turn spider hitch on the braid and a ten turn yucatan on the mono and test it for strenght. You'll be as sick as a parrot if you loss a good fish :)
