Which Species?

Hi,
caught a little fellow on feathers the other day and it's bugging me to know what it was. He was about 13cm long, on top of his back was a uniform light green color from head to tail and sides and underneath were silver. He had lots of scales and one dorsal fin. Also, he was a very lively little bugger!

Thanks for the link. Had a look at it and definitely not a coalfish. Shape was like a herring/sprat/pilchard alright.

Where are all the Herring these days as a matter of interest? I havent seen one on a supermarket fish counter in an age. Used to eat loads of them as a child, there was a fella in Buncrana used to appear every friday and sell them from the back of his van on the main st.

i got some in asda about 2 weeks ago but not seen any since then in any of the super markets, one of the guys said they were out of season??? i thought they were similar season to mack although maybe a bit earlier?

Might be wrong but I think the commercial herring fishery is in late autumn/winter? Pete will probably be on to let us know....

used to be a herring fishing trip out from bangor, i suppose its still running. anyway the trips started in june from memory.

you'll get them of blackhead (co.antrim) from the boat from early may/ june as they head towards the isle of man to spawn ,then another run at them as they return around sept/oct .
Not to sure about the ones in the south .

i was catching some thing like them the othet night and was told they were scad aka horse macs

scad look more like pollack but with a few spines on them, used to get them when looking for mack just as its getting dark

the scad have spines laterally from the posterioir tail fin up along a third of the body
