need advice regarding fish n strips

Ive been searching like a madman for reviews on Fish n Strips, does anyone know anything good or bad to say about it?

Im about to place a rather big order (big for me) at veals (thanks to you guys in here and Henry Gilbey). I found that Veals have 4 different flavours of Fish n Strips and im curious to know if it works or if its totally useless.

Usually fish for Cod and flounder on the swedish costlines, so what do you lads think? should i have a go at it, or am i better off without it?
What flavour is recommended?

ps. when my spouse goes mad 'cause im buying fishery things for every last dime i can get my hands on i blame it all on you guys and specially Henry

first order to veals £110 (including shipping) (loads of softbaits and endtackle goodies and perhaps some fish n strips)
next order to veals £150 (including shipping) (penn 525 mag)

Haven't used them myself.
Didn't like the look of them. I've seen many postings/reviews (including on this site) some say they work but most say they are no use. I would stick to real bait and save my money for real tackle
By the way check out http://www.fishtek.co.uk/index.jsp these are the best softbaits I've ever used. They last much longer than any others I've tried.

I bought some out of curiousity, and I had also bought the peel-a-crab fish sticks, again I was curious to see if these would be worth having in the tackle box for a bit of last minute emergency fishing if on holliers or something. I found the peel-a-crab fish sticks to be useless, although fishing wasn't great on any occasion when I've tried them, the fish that were caught seemed to favour the real bait.
However, the fish'n strips were a different story. I brought them along on a session only last week. I was in no need of them by any means, I had 5 or 6 different kinds of bait and plenty of them, but I threw a fish'n strip on one of a 2 hook rig, and on one occasion the fish took it in preference to the fresh bait. I tried one later and took another fish. Tried one again on the next session and once again the fish fell to it. I never had the same reaction with the 'smartbait - peel-a-crab fishsticks'. So I would say by all means get some to have in your box, but obviously they are no substitute, but rather a welcome alternative when in dire need! They are a bit pricey, if you are buying lots, then I think its a lot cheaper in the US!

Sorry, you were asking which 'flavour'... the ones I've used were the original ones.. crab i believe!

thanks for letting me know about your experience with the fish n strips, i think i´ll buy 2 packs and check it out.

We dont have peelercrabs here and buying squid is to expensive so i usually use prawns as bait and sometimes i use chickenhearts or chickenliver, chop the liver and put in a homemade feeder, works like a charm, the blood really attracts fish.

Buying from the US doesnt really work out for me, the shipping is outrageous, when i buy from the uk i dont have to pay swedish customs and taxes since its within the european union (only good thing about it I think) and the prices for softbait is sometimes 10 times lower in the UK. Buying softbaits in sweden is a joke.. i pay the same amount of money for ONE firetail (black/red) that you pay for 8-10 of them.

So once again, thanks for the info and i´ll check out fishtek.

A few people here, myself included, buy squid from Chinese supermarkets as it is so much cheaper. The last lot I bought was 2.2KG for €6.45.

Don't know if you could find one near to you?

thanks for the tip, have to check that out.. i doubt that they have fresh squid, is the frozen ones any good?

Yup, that's what I use. Allow them to thaw for a couple of hours and you should be able to pry a few off the top or sides. Work around the block and the rest will soon follow. Try to keep them intact though as it makes baiting up easier. The ones we get over here are about 6 inches long which makes them a handy size to slice down one side, remove the backbone and wrap around lug, mussel or crab on a pennel rig. Wrapped up in bait elastic, they make a tidy bait.

I´ll have a look as soon as the stormwarning is over... good thing i have some elastic in my order, I knew I would be needing it.

Talking about Exotic shops, tried the Indian mackerels from the Indian shop on the quay in Waterford. They are rather cheap (€6 the bag of 6) and look like small tunas. Fished from the slipway in Ballymacaw Cove and caught a 10lbs conger eel in broad day light in a rough sea, last thing I expected there. That shop sails cheap squids, whole small ones and the bodies of large ones. They have other stuff, not sure if they come from fresh water or salt water, will try them all anyway, cheaper than tackle shops

Was down in the Red strand on Sunday just planned to do some walking but as i had the gear in the car thought i might do some casting practice...but then of course the sun started shining the tide was rising and i wanted to be fishing but no bait..... but i did have some fish n strips in the box somewhere. Long story short great day fishing, lovely weather..no fish

. Not sure if the fish n strips were to blame but at least i felt like i was fishing. For me i think i will have some in case im stuck but otherwise go for real bait. (imagine what i would be writing if i had caught a whale on em)
