Thanks for a very enjoyable evening gents, I have indeed learned a new method of conger fishing.
Ronald, thanks for volunteering to jump onto a rock to try and get that fish untangled - either a brave man or a madman - probably both
No injuries to report, just stood on the grates and my foot went between the bars. Luckily my knee was there to get jammed and stop me going any further
Didn't hurt - honest
Lee

Even a bad days fishing is better than working.

We were on the pier this morning from 8:45 to 12:30. High tide as just before 9:00.
We finished with over 40 small whiting, pouting and blochan between us. My son got over half of these including a "monster" blochan of about 1/2 lb. Most of the fish were between 2" and 6" but great crack anyway.
Daniel fished a single hook paternoster (size 14 hook), I fished light float gear.

Glad to hear you got a few fish nobuzz , the whiting will be there in plague proportions right through the winter and they dont get any bigger . plenty of food for the conger though .
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

You used to get the odd decent whiting of the back of the pier ,but that was years ago even then it was only about 3/4lb . the fish dont get a chance to get into the lough , the trawlers work the east bank across the entrance all winter ,though i was talking to a guy of the fisheies protection vessel a while back and he was saying the lough is more of a nursery area ,strange that there's no bigger fish predating on the small ones though . it might be because its quite shallow and the bigger fish dont feel safe so stay out in the deep water .

Fished the pier tonight from 18.00hrs until 21.00hrs with davy ,managed 3 congers between us with best one coming in at 19/20lb and the worst at 3lb .
Afew rockling put in a guest appearance but nothing of any great size ,but not a bad session ,lee and marty called down for a natter after they're casting exploits ,cant wait to see drew ,there's some serious slagging to do regarding his footwork .

Sorry I missed your post on the "clubs and meets section" Ronald, I'd def like to have a crack at the congers (esp the ones that you guys are getting - well done) - are you willing to accept an apprentice? Perhaps you'll let us know whenever you intend having another meet and hopefully I can make it. I have a 50lb class rod and a Penn 4/0 Senator with 80lb braid and from what I have read that should do the job??? What about the business end......6/0's or bigger? What about weights? Any other tips?

We where just fishing off the platform (the back is a bit dodgy for the wee man). The ground at end of the pier is quite clean out past about 40yrds but I would tend to use a lead that wouldnt roll about too much as it will just find snags.IMHO anyway.

People[/b]:myself , marty , davy
Duration:4hrs
Tide:lw 19.30hrs
Weather:light se wind slight chop on the sea
Bait:fresh mackerel
Rigs:single hook paternoster and conger traces
Results:3 congers ,1 3 bearded rockling and a couple of shore rockling
Report:headed down the pier for a go at congers and in the hope of a few decent rockling ,as we walked along the back of the pier a guy gave us some fresh mackerel he'd just caught
,got the rods set up and had just got the gear in the water a few minutes when i saw the tip of the mini rod nodding ,i thought a crab had homed in on the fresh mackerel and as i lifted into it ,all was solid for a split second before it started to pull back into the boulders ,after a bit of pressure i thought a conger had taken the rockling bait then all hell let loose as a big rockling took of across the hole , after a quick stuggle i managed to steer the fish into open water were i got a glimpse to this cracker .specimen number 5 for me this year ,happy as a pig in **** .
