I dont really know where to put this but it ties in with the thread on illegal netters

Why do the eastern boys have such a bad attitude to angling - alright i was on the prom in salthill with the mack bashers - but they had total disregard for crossing my line - i understand there is a language barrier - they could hold their hand up - something - but no - would reel in to the point of nearly knocking my rod - and id have to untangle them!

and theyd repeatadly do it - was trying to reel in before they got near me but to no avail

they didnt appear to be drinking but basically started to cast over and as close as possible - whilst they were taking everything, 3 inch pollack etc.

had a small blenny and they nearly died when i threw it back in

had to pack it in - are these boys going to destroy fishing

the numbers of them down on the prom was amazing - wont be going back for a long time

thats just wrong...was out at balskadden yesterday and same story mack bashers everywere... they cast out and either get tangled or loose gear its annoying

I know its not nice but cut there lines after they tangle you a few times should see them move off

Cutting lines could be seen as an aggressive step. Don't get me wrong I would feel like doing it and as long as I felt I had an even chance would be prepared to back myself. However and it is a big however there are usually more of them and usually some alcohol so things could get messy.

What is the solution ???

My 50 cents would be to leave them to it. Go find a mark not fished and have some peace n quiet for yourself. There are plenty of great marks out there not being fished. Most of these mackerel bashers are not what I would call anglers anyway. Rods only used 2/3 months of the year and as you point of they have little regard for the fish they catch.

Or limit yourself to a single spinner. That way its much easier to untangle any of their lines. You can cast further and quicker and will probably out fish most of the numb nuts there with a set of feathers.

thats what I do but it would be nice to be able to fish ur local pier in comfort when you want to go fishing instead of wasting time driving to other marks.

thats why you dont see me down salthill with my beachcaster this time of year... just stick with spinning rod and float or spinner...

a pair of steel toe cap boots always come in handy...

Wicklow Pier is the exact same . . .I was down for a walk one evening and they just kept everything, fishing 15 yards from the Pier wall and slaughtering small whiting and flats, fair enough, the whiting never go back when dropped even gently from maybe 2-3 foot up but still . . .it sickened me to see this happening . . .only some friends stopped me going to the cops to see could they send someone over there . . .but in the end I thought they'd just laugh at me . . .so never bothered . . .

I only ever fish the piers in winter as this seems to be the only time you can fish in peace.

Looks like this is a nationwide problem. Anything that is caught is taken home, or sold? Have to agree with Big Phil though the last think I would do is get involved. You only have to look at the amount of murders are taking place amongst these communities, it looks like they all carry weapons and they all dont be going fishing.

You think we got it bad, ask a coarse angler what their doing to the rivers and lakes, every thing goes from minows to pike if it swims they kill it.

Happened to me there 2 or so years ago at Dun Laoighre pier. Myself and a mate were doing a bit of float fishing and there was 1 guy a bit down from us. He repeatedly crossed and tangled our lines so we just went down and said it to him.Big mistake! He went on a mad one at us(we were only 15 or 16) and said he was going to "slice us with his hooks" if we said anytin else to him! We went back to our spot, fairly shocked and continued for a while.10 mins later the garda come and take him away! Some woman who was walking buy heard him give us abuse and rang them. Maybe a bit drastic to come for what he said to us but he was known for it down there. Hopefully he learned his lesson anyway!

I was at dunlickey co clare a couple of days ago to get a few fresh mackerel. This mark is a cliff rising 100 feet vertically, but nearly always provides mackerel as required.

The lad next to me was telling me the day before one guy was casting out when his hook caught the ear of the guy next too him and he did applied the full force of the cast. Luckily he did not go over, nor did his ear come off. ( i'd like that in the species hunt feather tipped with human ear ) It buried in his ear/head and produced an awful lot of blood.

So keep clear of all amateur casters!

agreed! but sometimes they come to you!! had a guy in wicklow feathering beside me on a rock i could bare stand on alone. he was practically casting over my tripod?!! missing my head with his feathers by inches!!! the nerve....

had one bragging last night about all the pike he catches and eats informed him it was illegal and asked him where he caught them ,suddenly he wasnt so chatty and left i wonder y !!!!!!!

Some of them are very good and just go angling for sport I have had a good few of them out on the boat with no problems at all with paying or behaving etc some were very keen to release fish.

I tell some of them it is illegal to land rays and congers doggies etc and that the cops or bailiffs will confiscate their cars and rods and fine them thousands of euro that usually does the trick

Some of them will eat anything. They want to catch fish all day long and fill boxes n boxes of fish to take.

Lidl specials are really encouraging some of the messy ones. I have also encountered some of them drunk n probably stoned out of their minds at 9:30 in the morning thinking I would have no problem taking them out with several more litre bottles of Lidl vodka and slabs of cans

Some of the dodgy groups have me pestered to take them sharking can you imagine them going up the steps of the pier in Cobh with a few Blues over their shoulders. So I told them December is the best month for sharking

Monkstown and Cobh piers are a nightmare as they cast out under you as you come alongside and tell you to move out of their way. They even have bicycle wheels with onion bags catching tiny crabs and shrimp with ropes floating everywhere so an accident is only waiting to happen! Just a few accidents resulting in compensation claims from the harbour boards or county councils and you will find a lot of shore marks closed off to all anglers.
