Pollack fishing lures

#1 Post by ESC+RC »

Hi Guys.Heading to the west in a couple of weeks to do a bit of pollock fishing.Just wondering what your opinion is on the lures I am taking with me and if there is anything I am missing that I should take with me. Will be taking three spare bodies of all the plastics just in case.I’ve always had success with the jelly worms in orange, red, black,or any combination of them colours. The sand eels I’ve only started using in the last few years with decent success but find the jelly worms better overall. The two jelly’s that are rigged are the ones I’ve had the most success with.I’ve never fished with shads before(I’m old school)so I have included one to see how I get on with them.Anyway what do you guys think. :D

You'll do ok with that lot. Locating decent marks would be crucial.

The Spro metal (3rd down on the right) works great for me. I do recommend changing your hooks for 1 or 1/0 singles. The pollack are usually amongst the kelp and having a single hook, pointed up, is great away of avoiding snags when you're searching the depth's

Hi Rory. Thanks for the advice will take that on board. But since I’ve started using Weedless savage gear V2 sandells I don’t use metals that often. With these I can work them right in close to the kelp and very rarely lose a lure. :D

Your welcome - during my fishing escapades, I have noticed (may be the way I'm fishing it) that big pollack close to the shore can be a bit tentative. Over the last year or so, the really big ones I've caught, 5/6 lbs range, follow it for a while, gently nipping at it. The smaller/medium sized ones are more obliging, executing a seagull like swoop

Funny you should say that. Was over on Inishmore a few weeks ago and the reverse was happening.Loads of small pollack plucking at the lure but only hooked up maybe 1 in 5 bites where as the biggest fish I caught that weekend hammered the lure.Caught 3 pollack to about 6 pounds and a very nice 8 maybe 8 and a half pound fish.It just goes to show fishing is not a exact science. :D .Tight lines.
